We have been talking about the idea of building a Barn type building to live in plus house the cars and have a good size workshop,Plus somewhere to house all my **** ,Ive collected over the years.I started out building stuff out side many years ago, then rented sheds, got a house with a good size garage, then built a house with a ok garage ,but for the next chapter ,want to do the Barn thing ..... Show us what you guys got ,keen to see , and hear feed back. Thanks ,Steve. PS , plus room for the 'HAMB BAR'
Kuztom, you need to find a decent piece of dirt, put a m***ive barn/workshop on it and then get this delivered for accomodation mate... http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-me-p...roperty/Houses-for-sale/auction-264404777.htm go on , you know you want to .
Rod ,ur off the rails ! hahah, Ive seen that its very cool , Id be ok with that attached to the BARN. Hey ,you would have seen a few around your travels, the Barn thing is done well up there.........
Spend some time over on Garage Journal. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/ Lots of great ideas over there.
The Naki Kid (Ray Inwood) has just done exactly that.... Bought a block of land out of town, put up a big American style barn, half for living, half for cars. Heh heh, just reminded me, when I was in the US in 05 I got taken to a farm outside of Edmond in Oklahoma. The good ol boy had a big barn, lived in half, the other half was full of military vehicles.... tanks, bren gun carriers, jeeps, APCs, you name it..... crazy. His name was the Outlaw!
30 X 44, 14 ft wall ht, 12 ft door, 20 amp everything 6 outlets per circuit, R19, sheeted inside with OSB and all painted white. poured piers into the floor for a lift in the future, 5 inch fiber concrete with 1/2" rebar 2 ft spacing. have gas / water / sewer to the property but not hooked up yet. Can expand the building to 44 x 92, commercial zoned lot. plan to build the rest later and rent, didnt think this economy was the best time to build commercial space. If I was single Id build the rest and live in 44 x 30 of it.
Like a nice shop and a nice house, just not in the same building. I know of one that caught fire and burned the end ot the house out, and one where paint spray made a child ill. Maybe a good fire wall would work.
and not to mention that grinding/ workshop dust that settles everywhere....yes, make it seperated and airtight.... I live upstairs of my workshop now...its nice to look down on my projects and shop goodies....but it can test you...and the girls get cranky.....but its home for now......oh and welding fumes settle up here too...but it is cool to have my model a in my lounge room.....sort of looks like a hillbilly crackhouse version of mark moriaritys joint....haha....Bert
Thanks Marty, I have seen some pics of Rays Barn when he started, keen to see it now , might be worth a road trip up there !
Yeah my dream since forever. Im just now moving to our new house w/ my girlfriend where im gonna have a brick barn thingy that can store 2 cars (european.....) or one car and a *****in work space. The gr*** area around it and the house will be enuff space to keep more cars than i will ever own, and being of our property we can do what we want w/ it, we were thinkin old gas station/speed shop kinda thing. Considering i spent years buildin cars in the driveway or in apartment garages this for me is as good as it can get! and i cant wait to start on it! The barn/old industrial stable thing will be my next step if i win the lottery! Good luck, mate!
As mentioned before go check out GarageJoural.com. Search Garage Condo. You will be amazed at what this guys garage looks like!
MY wife is ok with several hundred cars. But no parts in the house. But If I where single I would sell this place and do the large building house barn thing. A buddy is building a Shop with a living space on each end and shop in the middle. One end for the wife to live in and the other for the wifes younger sister. The shop in the middle for him. And the best part the girls are footing the bill! He hasnt admitted to being a mormon yet Old Wolf
After talking with a bunch of shop owners, its really tough to make adjoined spaces airtight, quite, etc... I've got my lovely bride talked into a Denali 48 pkg, with the condition that the shop under the living quarters is the clean/***embly area and I get a separate steel building for fabrication/paint/noise.
i have an attached garage shop.....it would be alot better to be seperated...my kitchen gets dusty and stinky from the grinding, welding etc.,glad my wife is real cool.
Ii was kicking this very idea around, since moving to Hays. Real estate is stupid, around here. When I mentioned it to the fiance.....well....veto would have been a kind way to describe the reaction.
Im loving this thread already!! This is my barn I am currently renovating... 24x24 main structure, (2) 24x20 drive in garages, (1) 12x24 walk in shop attached to right out of frame. Main barn level is the bar and social area...the upstairs will soon be my "art" studio and probably where I fall asleep.
no, no, no....THIS is what you need! And it happens to be in the cl***ifieds! 24'x40' and cheaper than a pole barn...
if all goes well with the refinance, I will be adding a 24 x 24 x12 garage to my existing 20 x 20 x 8 garage this summer. It makes me stupid excited just to think about it.
Yes ,thanks ,always forget about that site ,will go through it for sure. At present we live in a tilt slab house with a 70sq/mt attached garage, its full and have stuff stored all over the place ,I have a bar in one end ,all my mags , books , models etc, this area needs to be seperated, would be great to have every thing under one roof in one place for a change. I understand ,that painting , grinding, welding , bog dust are issues ,but the way I would do it is have these areas 'closed off' ,ive got many ideas.
I bought this building a few months ago. It was previously used as an ice cream plant. At just under 7000 sq/ft there is pleaunty of room for everything I own. The plan now is to turn the "office" into a 1000 sq/ft appartment. It even came with a forklift!!
Watch your zoning codes carefully. Nothing like dumping a bunch into the best place on earth and having the MAN rain on your parade.
yes, we dont ever "live" in our sheds.......but we can "stay" here 24/7 as a "caretaker" for the premises........thats the loophole I was told to use and I have a friend who his ex told the local council he was living in his factory/shed and they tryed for 15 years to remove him.....hes still there as a caretaker..............Bert
hmm I have a.. 24x60 shop/garage.. 1/2 of it lounge collection display 25 by 50 steel arch building(holds 9 cars) 30x70 pole barn for yard equipment 3 single garages attached to the house on 13 acres really try to keep nonrunners inside all the time and at the lake a double garage and a tuckunder garage 18x40 and we still park daily drivers outside most of the year build bigger ,taller ,with acreage... a housetrailer inside a existing barn woks ok if you can get natural light inside.. good luck
Have always thought an old firehouse would fit the bill perfectly...same concept as a barn, with tall ceilings for a lift and plenty of shop room.
