Man, After reading ALL of the comments on this kids car I'm amazed! All he asked was Whadaya think of these free wheels? And he gets a ration of crap! Opinions ARE like assholes! Kid, the car looks GREAT. I can see where you are headed. I think you should build it the way YOU want. Listen to other people's opinions, but remember, they are only opinions! Don't take it personally! Everyone's entitled to their own F'ed up opinion! Use what makes sense to you and FLUSH the rest. It's a HOT ROD. It's all about doin' it YOUR WAY! Keep it up!!!!

I like the steels myself. They match the theme more. The photoshop with the fenders cut out looks good too. I would pass on the "dragger" version for now.

All this from a guy that doesn't even have a car??!!

Dynaflash, I think you are doing great! I think Oj has a point though. Figure out what you can do to 'hotrod' it, and the look you want, and stick to it. You are way ahead of where I was at your age, and I hope you don't get discouraged by the negative comments on this thread. Some are a complete waste of time, but most may prove to be useful.

First let me say the steelies look better on your car. You need something to break up the black on black of the wheel and tire. Maybe just add a set of baby moons there still some what cheap to buy.

Now for the opinion portion of the program. Some of the things to me (not criticizing but an observation) is it seems that you have 2 or 3 styles going on at one time. To me scallops say custom the number says circle track and the raised rear end with the slapper bars say drag race. It just seem like to much is going on to me which mean nothing in the scheme of things.

I have watched you build this from the start and I think you should be commended. Don't let all the opinions bother you do it the way you want. All cars go Thur stages and people with what they like stick with it.

Some of these replies are sincere help. The car would look a LOT nicer if it were a LITTLE neater is all. I agree, some responses are too dramatic though.

i usually choose not to get involved in drama, but i gotta say, your last few posts really show what an asshole you are...there's such a thing as constructive criticism, and then there's idiots like you that try to discourage people that WANT to learn....

why don't you post up a picture of something you've built, so we
can all learn the way a car SHOULD be built,,,,,since you seem to know everything, you should share your vast knowledge with the rest of us,,,,

i give the kid a lot of credit,,,,he's DRIVING, DOING, and LEARNING

So, you're a car guy, huh? Why don't you come on out to Billetproof Northwest this year, I'll pay for your gate pass. You can come tell Marty himself what you think of his car.

EDIT: oh, my bad, I just read your profile and see you're a 'vette guy. Now it all makes perfect sense.

Looks good! I'd go with the stock blacked out wheels, maybe use the Cragars on a future project. I think it definitely looks like a cool vintage flat tracker.

Ignore the knuckleheads and do what you like.. that's what all the rest of us are doing. Cool car! Good luck!

  12. "I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken" I only hope the perfect people on here haven't soured your taste for the old car hobby. Keep doing what you are doing, you will only learn from any mistakes you may make. I like the steel wheels better, on this car.

my two cents.. i dont blame anyone for ripping on the car.. i cant count how much shit i've been given over the years.. but ya know what?? i dont mind, it gives you a tough skin and in the end you learn from it.. i personally liked the ideas of radiused rear fenderwells (i would have added a straight axle)... but ultimately.. YOU DONT PUT NUMBERS OR SPONSOR TYPE LETTERING ON A CAR THAT DOES NOT EARN IT OR IS NOT GOING TO RACE!!! thats like wearing a t-shirt that says i have a big dick and not being a porn star.. if you want a race car build it.. dont put shit on it until you actually plan to race it.. just my opinion.. if you dont plan on changing the car much, put the steelies back on and ditch the numbers and scallops, stop wasting money on do-dads and cheap rattle can paint and put the right type of tires on the wheels and have someone help you shoot the whole car in DP so it dont rust away.

i was raised by a custom painter and body man, so i am kind of particular about paint and fitment of pannels... but again, you've never mentioned in this thread what look you are really going for (that i remember) so maybe you dont care if it needs body work or if the doors and hood fit like shit.. i wrecked my 55 (my first and only car so far) a couple weeks after i got it, so i fixed it and then a few years later i got t-boned by a broad going 50.. so i've completely redone the car now.. and after being in such a bad accident the front clip dont fit for shit but i've got it close as it can be and i'm making my junk look as nice as i can because every old car deserves attention to detail.. but you know what.. having a hell of alot less money and resources than you (i'm a college student, a family man, and only 25 living in an apartment) i can say you have no reason to complain about anyone of these fellas flipping you shit.. its good for you.. builds character.. even i know you cant just slap shit together and expect it to be considered good (unless the only person you want to impress is yourself, but lets face it, the reason we do this is to build impressive bad ass cars people are in awe of) and use being a young student as an excuse.. a good buddy of mine was only 15 or 16 when he was building a 52 chev 2dr into a nose up gasser, and he was 17 when we started building his 59 f-100 and we cut the small window roof off it and grafted on a big window roof he found at the swap and dumped the truck on its nuts (the real way, no bags), or the sick 27 roadster he started that was coming along real good (40's post war lakes style) before he had to sell it and started a 27 touring (also post war) that turned out real neat.. so i would really like people to stop giving the kid excuses to be pampered.. the car deserves better than radials and poor styling.. if the kid doesnt like the way the adults play then he shouldn't be in the shop.. some of the shit talking is uncalled for.. but you know what.. take it with a grain of salt.. we all have experience and we all learn from eachother.. what have you learned more from? people being honest and a few hurt feelings or people telling you things so that your feelings dont get hurt.. i personally prefer the cold hard truth.. it hurts sometimes and may be hard to accept but im hard headed.. anyhow.. i've rambled enough..

  16. How does a car go about 'earning' it? How many vintage circle track events are there nowadays?

I think it's perfectly fine to build a vintage stock car (yeah, lettering, numbering, and all) provided that it is faithful to a specific time period, racing series, rulebook, etc. How is this any different than building a 'gasser', lakes-style racer, or otherwise?

My project is a vintage 1951 NASCAR Grand National car...it will have numbers and sponsor information, and will conform to the 1951 NASCAR rulebook, period photos, detailed studies of survivors, and first-hand driver accounts. Chances are it will not be raced competitively (again, there's not a lot of vintage stock car events outside of the reunion events and exhibitions that I plan on taking the car to), and it will be driven on the street (gasp!) as many early stock cars were (care to see period photos of roundy-round cars with valid license tags?). It's all good though, I enjoy being an anathema.

thats just my opinion, i would not put a huge number on the door of a car i was not going to race... in any form... i dont care if its a drag car, lakes car, or roundy round.. if it's not earning a race car heritage why does it deserve a number?

ok i should be more precise, i can say if it was built as a drag car and you put the class it WOULD run on it, A-OK... or if its built as a clone of a particular drag/race car.. sure.. just not agreeing with numbering a car that has not been used in even so much as a reliability run. but as has been said.. opinions are like ass holes, everyone has one.. i just happen to be a hard headed stickler for tradition.. and as it sounds your car has a purpose, although it will not race it is authentic and has purpose with its heritage.. this kids car.. is just a car with scallops and a number and poorly thought out design.. you are taking your time and thinking your project through, taking the appropriate steps to make it right.. he is not.. big difference. super tired of half assness.. i was never allowed to fuck shit up.. again.. pops was a custom painter and body man, time, thoroughness, and quality was always foremost. but.. hey, what do i know.. im just a dumb young kid.

I dig the "totally stock" class, where "stock car" racing originated...

    24latemodel.jpg
(notice the hub caps! removed for racing)

I'd put more of a shadow on the numbers, but that would be really to fancy!

BTW- The '41 Ambassador rear fenders had a round radius rear fender, so I'd look for a pair of used ones. The color contrast would be cool, too!

Most opinions here are working way too hard.

    Go Steelies!

i would agree, that this is a big improvemnt on the idea. not trying to cut down your work, just a freindly suggestion, go with this version of what you had in mind.

scallops really have to be laid out well to look right, and i like the version better without them anyway

I think if you review "history", most circle track and stock cars were typically built with just this same quality and execution of "details"... there is a style conflict going on here, which I think we've settled, and he is going back to steel rims.

I think this thing is ass-kicking cool, and cooler than my '63 Tempest LeMans Sport Coupe that I customized when I was 17. My dad thought I was wasting my time, but I had several offers on that "monstrosity" within hours of putting a 'for sale' sign in the window, and sold it for triple what it was really worth, or what I had in it, that night.

I was totally happy, and continue to do as I please to my car to this day. I do ask for advise, and still get a lot of "assvise".

    Isn't that how "traditional" started?

    What do I know... lol

  26. 29hotrod55kustom nailed it, right upon the head. He's welcome to the beers in MY garage 'fridge anytime. You guys who are worried about the original poster's "Feelings" are a perfect example of the Pussyfication of America. The fellas who invented this hot rodding hobby didn't cry over teasing. This is a little bit more than a common message board. It's also hanging out in the shop. The only feelings that you should be worried about is whether something's hot. The Pussyfication of America stops at the garage door.

  27. Who said anything about 'feelings'? I think we owe it to the kid to teach him something about the history before we kick him in the teeth for not listening.

Somehow, I thought he was asking about the rims!
