Any idea what carb this is?? 1951 Merc Monarch, 255 c.i.d., I want to order a kit for it and there's no visible tag with any sort of model #. Thanks in advance.
Quick! Throw it away!. They weren't called the "Towering Inferno" for nothing. IMO you'd be bhetter off with a Holly 94. But you'd need an adapter or an 8BA Ford intake to run the 94.
Otherwise, I don't remember the model number, but I do know it's a stock Merc carb. It's a b***-ackwards carb design with the float bowl above the ventrui's. Your local parts store may even be able to look it up for you. There has to be someone here that knows the answer. -Jeff
You had the answer, Throw it away. Never seen one work right after you went into it. Kinda like a Holley
Its a stock 1949 - 1951 merc / monarch carb ....Holley 885/ sidedraft carb. for 255ci merc flathead. My 2 51s have the same breather mount to the oilbath breather. I call them "mushroom carbs" Macs has a rebuild kit for 55.00 bucks. The neat thing about the intake maniforld for this carb is a more modern carb will bolt onto the 4 bolt ontake. I think a chev 2 barrel rochester fits. Dennis
Good ol holly tea-pots. The stock on on my bros 53 worked alright, just like to spray fuel everywhere
The date is about the only thing that was ever stamped on. Little tiny stamp characters on the top of the accelerator pump relief (the extended protrusion on top of the carb upper body cover). Holley model 885 as stated earlier. These carbs get a bad rep due to damage caused from miss-handling and shade tree rebuilds. On occasion, I've had to buy several just to get enough parts to put one good one together. Over tightened screws cause warpage & leaks if not put together correctly. Leakers can definitely turn into a towering inferno. When these units are right, they work reliably and perform well. They have bigger throats & venturis than the 94s or 97s.
It is a model 885-FFC. There are a number of different "list" numbers. These were used by both Mercury and Lincoln in the years 1949~1951. These can be differentiated by comparing your carb to GOOD pictures of known carburetors. The items to pay very close attention to would be the position of the choke housing (which side of the carb); and the side and shape of the throttle arm. Jon.
Here's a pic of one on my Dad's 1950 F-1. The previous replys are correct as it has no markings. My brother installed a rebuild kit. Runs good at idle although my dad has not drivin the truck. My dad would like to purchase a stock air cleaner like the one shown in your photo.
You should be able fit a later Holley 2100 as it has the four stud flange. These were fitted to Y blocks and some International trucks. You can read about them here. http://www.carburetor.ca/carbs/tech/Holley/2100-index.html
