Yes as a matter of fact. VW engines were modified and used in plenty of planes in the past.

  4. Fwiw - it's called Airspeed Indicator.

The pitot is the dynamic/pressure air device.

The airspeed indicator requires a source of static air as well.

You can see the static air pickup on the left side of most Cessna aircraft.

In some flight configurations the static air pickup will be exposed to more or less pressure depending on which way the airplane is traveling.
IE: in a slip to the right or the left.

These differing pressures make the airspeed indicator inaccurate to a small extent.

Which means that crosswinds, headwinds and tailwinds will add to the inaccuracy factor with the instrument installed in a car.

Even so, it looks like a cool device to install in a hot rod.
    As is an altimeter.

Better than an altimeter may be the VSI (Vertical Speed Indicator), you can see climbs and descents in the hills easily although you can do the same with a common automobile vacuum gauge.

Since we're talking about cars with interesting instruments, I'd like to see a small altimeter as well as ambient air temp gauge with remote sender that matched S-W's in both size and appearance.

  5. Please, post pics when done. If nothing else will be a good conversation piece (not that Lucky Fast Eddie needs that. )

Well it's been in use now for almost a year and seems to be working pretty good. Most people don't reconise the tube on the hood and think it's a tach on the dash .Airplane guys seem to like it.
