Perry Boulevard, looking south toward downtown Buffalo. Bridge abutments at left remain from the Porter Avenue bridge
over the Erie C**** (State Barge C****). When this portion of the c**** was filled in after 1937, it was was renamed Perry
Boulevard. Farther along the roadway toward the city on the left side was the newly-constructed Lakeview Housing Project.
This portion of the c****, up to Porter Avenue, was filled in because of the Project's proximity and the belief that the watered
but unused c**** posed a health hazard to residents of the new public housing. (The c**** from Porter Avenue north was not
filled in until 1957 when the Thruway was constructed along the c**** bed and the name 'Perry Boulevard' disappeared
    from history.)

From 1816 through 1865, the location was occupied by the Phoenix Hotel.

Upon demolition of the Phoenix Hotel, the Tifft House Hotel was constructed. It endured for 28 years with a good reputation.
Here is the News article about the planned demolition of this hostelry.

The new William Hengerer Company store which was constructed in 1903. See a construction site photo here.

The Hengerer building still stands on Main near Lafayette Square (red arrow) although its exterior has been extensively
remodeled over the years. In the late 1980's, after the Hengerer's/Sibley s closed this location in the mid-1980's, the building
was converted into office space and renamed Lafayette

This is a sad commentary on America and our manufacturing industry.
