Have been going to Back to the '50s for about 10 yrs now with my dad. This is the first year that I will bringing a car. Have heard some horror stories about cars getting stolen or vandalized in the motels around the fairgrounds area.

Other than the car show, I don't get to Minneapolis enough to know what the good areas are. Where are you guys staying? Is the Bloomington area around the airport ok? Would like to stay where there are a few car guys, but not too close to the fairgrounds.

  2. I'd recommend Shoreview. About three or four miles northeast of the fairgrounds in an outer ring suburb just off I-694. A couple of hotels just off Lexington and 694 at/near the registration site. I'd also recommend, wherever one stays, to ask about security personnel watching the lot overnight, security cameras, and finally, insuring the vehicle one treasures.

Bloomington is about 15-20 miles from the fairgrounds and no safer.

I like the Hudson, WI area. 30 minutes to the fairgrounds, easy access to I94 and rates seem cheaper.

Avoid Brooklyn Park or Brooklyn Center, that's where cars have been stolen in the past.

Why not just camp right at the fairgrounds? I did that last year and it was great. We're doing it again this year. Not sure if the spots are all filled up yet or not.

Shoreview is right up the road. I work there. Nice quiet suburb with a few hotels. No one will mess with you over there

  8. i stay at the Holiday Inn Express in Roseville right off county road C , been going there for over 15 years and never had any problems. it's real close to the grounds , about a 10 minute drive....in fact you can take back streets and stay off of Snelling. it's well lite and plenty of parking...even for trailers if you need to.it is sorta isolated as there are mostly business around it that are not open during the weekend , so there is no scummy people hanging around

1-651-636-5800. i'm sure they are full because they only take reservations for next years BTT50's when you check in. the only way to get in is if someone cancels....don't get put on a "waiting list"......just call them 3-4 times a day the week before to see if they get any

Problem at this point may be even finding a room. You might want to consider staying out of town and commuting in for the show.

You would be surprised on how many hotels there are in the Twin Cities. I have always called a couple weeks before and found something, usually about 15 miles away. But never any car guys around . That's why I'm asking where you stay.

Shoreview/Roseville areas will be all booked unless you can get a cancellation. On the MSRA website they have one of the members who is a travel agent. She will find you a room in a decent area. She does this as a courtesy for people traveling to the show.

  12. there are plenty of car guys and hot rods at my hotel , that is about all that will be there...with a lot of bench rodding in the parking lot at night. it's usually the same people every year. there are also a few guys from Iowa that stay there too. you may even get to park next to me

I actually stayed in the Marriott in Eden Prairie last year right off of 494. About 15 miles, seemed like a safe area, but not one old car parked in the lot.

That's cause that area is ghetto as it gets. Might as well just park your car in North Mpls and call it a day. :D

  16. that area IS north minneapolis, stay away from south minneapolis too, especially at night!!

if you wanna be in the THICK of bench racing at night and all the action and hijinx, find a room in Roseville, plenty of cars in the lots!

  17. You know, I lived in NE a couple miles away in the 90s, same area several HAMBers live now, my sister in law lives in Brooklyn Park, in a pretty swanky neighborhood. I would be carefull with blanket statements.

I live in Crystal, nice enough area, but I don't leave anything too nice outside too long.

Cars were actually stolen from motels in Brooklyn Park and Brooklyn Center. The lodging available in both of these cities are not in the swanky neighborhoods, they are in the hood, FACT!

The dealer I work at is in BP, we talk to the police all the time, unless your north of 85th it's the hood, FACT!

Sounds like this guys coming from the south so it may be easier to stay along the 35W/E corridor or along 494 in Bloomington if he can't get anything in Roseville or close to the fairgrounds

  21. :)
As far as the cities I would not trust my car at ANY hotel. Look at teh truck stolen in Austin. Be safe and take precautions -------ANYWHERE!:)

Why not stay downtown Mpls? This place has secure underground parking and is about 15 minutes from the fairgrounds ... about 6 blocks off of Hennepin, which turns into Larpentuer ... practically a straight shot there.

2010 will be my 27th straight year. For most of the first 20 years I stayed at hotels in the Roseville area - no problems whatsoever, except for room rates that that are nuts on BTT50's weekend. The last few years I've been at the Day's Inn in Moundsview. It's about 10 minutes from the Fairgrounds, totally problem free and the rates are not outrageous.

We have been staying at the Super 8 in Brooklyn Center for the past 8 or 9 years. Never had any trouble. The BC police cruise through the hotel lots quite often. If somebody wants your car, it doesn't matter where you are staying. Be aware of the area and take precautions. Don't leave valuables in sight, lock the car, etc. Use a club if you have to. May not prevent a theft, but it might discourage the amateur. Hey Larry, how about bringing some pictures of yoour woodie to BTT 50'S. I'm talking about the new car you know. Tom
