If it's a US built car exported down under, the correct location is on the left A post - if that's your car in the avatar, it would be on the piece cut out when it was chopped most likely. Note that some states used the engine number on ***le and/or registration, which was located on the right side of the block on an ear behind the distributor, stamped in. This causes problems because more often than not the motor's been changed out for something else. A lot of cars sent down under were Canada builds, though, and they can differ - sometimes they have the serial number under the hood as part of the body tag. The folks at Chevytalk.org might be able to help with better resources for Canadian-built cars. FWIW, the car number is just a serial number, although since the "VIN" came about they're used interchangably.

While you're doing that, my new '34 (Ford) has a different (but short) VIN than the ch***is shows just forward of the firewall on the ch***is rail. It's been that way since at least 1957. Did (flathead) engines begin with the letter D because if so that might be what's going on with mine as well.
