Pretty much posting this to publicly thank kustombuilder (Mike) for setting me up with an Airlift system for my Impala, and for answering my stupid questions. IF you are interested in going with air ride, contact Mike. Seriously, he's a good guy that actually want's to help his customers.. Thanks again Mike. Obviously i have a long way to go before it's done but i felt now was the time to get the suspension taken care of seeing how i just mated the body and frame a couple weeks ago.. So, here are some photo's of another typical 62 Imp on bags .. When it is aired out it actually set's on my lift so it's not exactly all the way down. There's about another inch left. I'm NO lowrider and have never claimed to be although i do respect the way the old school guy's built those super clean lowriders. I just really dig the ability to drop it etc whenever i want.I'm like a kid with a new toy! haha Tony
look at your getting all sideways.. you best be breaking out the Old School Tru Spokes next.. Its looks good Tony...
Looks like it sits right to me impalas look good sitting on the ground, sounds like you had some good help.
Well, i can't say never but there are no plan's to run spokes on this even though they do look good. I do have a couple different set's of wheels for it, one being 14" reversed Rockets that i will be putting thin whites on. I think those will look nice, and i might look for a nice set of Cragars eventually for it, again with this whites. I did have good help for sure. Mike know's his ****. Thanks guy's.. Tony
Tony, I am sure you were told this, but as you run the car thru its positions, do a finger check. to makes sure there is room around the front spring pocket as it travels thru its range. It is does not hav about a finger distance you could run a chance of the bag wearing (during its deflection of the car bouncing on the bags during normal driving). Under its static position the bags are normal, but when you drive they buldge from the road and bumps, driveways, speedbumps etc..
I did do exactly what you said Ken, and there is about a fingers width all the way around. More when they are aired up. The closest they are is about a half inch and that's completely dropped so i think it should be good. Thanks for the advice. It's always good to hear the tips and tricks when trying something new. Tony
Looks good. How did you do the front shocks. I have Shockwaves in my 59 and they ****. I didn't use bags because I couldn't come up with a good location for the shocks.
I have not done them yet, thats next. I've been looking online at the mounts sold and i know i can make a set probably nicer than most for less than what they want. I'll do it off the rear of the lower control arm to the inside of the frame rail. Should be a pretty simple deal. Asidrownyou, I agree, Supremes do look real slick on these. They were a thought as well i just didn't write it. I have a long way to go before i need to think about other rolling stock..the main set will me the M/T's that are on it. it'll just be a stockish' Impala with a twist. I am thinking about flipping the whitewalls out on these though. I'm just not sure how that will look. might just do it and see but something tell's me it won't look right. Tony
I've had a few guy's pm me who own X frame cars asking about the install so i thought i would add a little more info. I bought mount's from a company called Coolcars off the web. They were about 120 per axle and made the job a simple bolt in deal. I'm making my own front shock relocation kit but they can be purchased as well. The only area that needed any modification was the area around the front shock mount. A hole needs to be made so you can feed the air hose out. I found a straight fitting and making that hole to be the easiest and safest way to get it out of there without running into any rubbing problems. Here's a couple pics to show what i am referring to. Aside from that, the only other thing you need to do is mount the hardware in the trunk. It IS that easy. Just thought i would add that for anyone interested in doing one of these but are apprehensive about what's involved. It's a very straight forward deal. Tony
No pics yet but eventually i'll get some. I borrowed a friends Air Ride Tech front kit before he installed it and just duplicated the mounts they sell so they are nothing special though.
air ride techs catoloque has some great pics of mounts for the front shocks. i have thier setup in my 59 wagon for about 7-8 yrs .works well a little more pricey then others . actually all our personal vehicles (4) have airride either factory or air ride tech . the bottom shock mount was just a single u shaped piece bolted to the lower control arm with 1 bolt and the upper mounted to the outside of the ch***is. it takes a lot of storage to lift my wagon . i have 2 - 3 gal tanks stuffed in inside the quarters and that will only last for 1-2 full trips up and down without the comp kicking on .
