Does anyone have any plans or designs of old tow truck or crane setups- i want to make up a setup to bolt onto the back of my bedford farm truck so i can move my cars in and out of the shed, lift bodies on and off and pickup cars from paddocks etc. an info would be great cheers
Not exactly plans, but maybe this will help... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=164719
Similar to what your saying,,,made a bracket that accepts a tractor 3 pt. drawbar,,drops into rear stake pockets on F600,,,use a 3pt. boom pole,,,chains forward to side pockets for support,,,and a chain hoist. Not REAL heavy duty, but you can build to suit your needs.
Too bad they ain't in your neck of the woods............. The pictures might give you a good start on desiging your own. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Weld...em&pt=Other_Vehicle_Parts&hash=item439f2027f0 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Will...temZ180503922128QQptZUSQ5fCarsQ5fTrucks#v4-35
cool, i'll check that idea out- just looked at a local truck, but the guy wanted $3g, and wasen't lic or runing. it was an old pommy truck made out of about three sets of ch***is rails all split and re welded, to make the boom and struts it had bit's hanging off everywhere. I like the red setup on ebay- shame about the price on the willys ebay one - wonder what the reserve is? I got another local lead on a guy i've bought stuff from before so will check it out.
Typically I would say avoid using an old-style cable and boom style set-up for moving cars these days, the way that cars have changed in their design is why you saw a big shift in the design of towing units, like the under-car draw-bars. Seeing as though you're probably moving old vehicles with them though, an old-style set-up should be fine. Not blueprints, but, these may help a bit: http://public.fotki.com/modeltrucks...ures/holmes_wreckers/various_holmes_wreckers/

I could make a cable winch, but prefer the old school look of a chain winch.

Gary Frank, you're my hero. Do you have more pics? It looks so old school yet it will be completely usable. I want to build one. How many feet of what size angle iron did you use?
