Mark and I scored a 2 1/16" Hilborn setup for our dragster. I called Hilborn today with the serial number and they were so cool- they emailed a scan of the original invoice! It was sent to Brockman Speed Shop in Dayton Ohio on 11/15/1966, and set up to run either straight alky or up to 20% on nitro, and it was set up for a 327. The only thing I can find about Brockman is that at some point in the late 60's they ran, or sponsored a '41 Willys g***er. I was curious to know if anyone out there had more info about the speed shop and the cars they ran/sponsored. Thanks! Dean
I remember they were located on Troy Street, one block North of Keowee Street. They built a motor for my brother n law back in the 70's. Awesome work came from their shop. I have been there a few times. They had great compe***ion like Ault and James, George Montgomery and the new comer Kammer and Kammer speed shop. I was good friends with Joe Kammer and his Son Bobby. They ran The Riddler in the 70's 80's. My dad was a friend of George Montgomery. Just a little Dayton Speed Shop info.
There's a handful of Brockmans that live here in Indiana just across the border and in Hagerstown (i.e. Brockman Mellowtones http://www.brockmancustomparts.com/page19.html). I'm not sure if they're related but these cats are into circle tracking for the most part. They really know their stuff, though. I purchased a fairly seriously built SBC from one of 'em. I'll see what I can find out. B.M.
Back in the mid-50's that was my candy store! Walked in and drooled over the goodies. Yes I believe they were on Troy street but I moved from Dayton in 1978. I think Ohio George has a website you could call him and ask for any info he may have. Great guy to talk to. He and his son now build engines for the Indy Lite series I believe. Jim
I must add that the folks at Hilborn are top notch! I had an early magnesium FI set for one my Olds engines not that long ago and needed info as well as parts and talked to some old timer there, that knew the set-up and ran the Olds Blocks from the late 50's to the early 60's. Great stories and willingness to bend over backwards to get you what you need.
It was at the intersection of Valley St. and Troy St., in a small row of buildings. It was a real speed shop, they built engines, and sold lots of go fast goodies. Many of my teenage paychecks went to them. When I went in to buy my first camshaft, (at 16) I had a Crane catalog with me, and had marked the biggest big block cam they had as the one I wanted. The elderly gentleman behind the counter, took the time to ask some questions about what I was building. He then proceeded to educate me in the art of parts matching, and why this cam was a bad choice, to get the most power out of my engine. In many subsequent visits, he always remembered my name and what I was building, and helped me to do it right. He even spent about an hour in the parking lot, on a hot summer day, trying to help me with an off ideal bog I had in my new Holley. Everyone that worked there was a true car guy, and liked nothing better, than helping others to go fast. It closed in the mid to late 80s. Its a shame, that mail order and sites like E-Bay, have killed the local speed shops. Most were run buy older guys, with years of experience, and they liked to p*** it on to the younger motor heads. I went to some other speed shops in the area after that, but they seemed to be more about the big money guys, and didn't really have time for some kid.I know for a while, there was a Brockmans Heating and Air next door, but it is also gone.
brockmans spe******t on 4-speeds and distributors was joe klepaz{spelling?}...he is still doing 4-speeds and distributors out of his home garage....i think he may still help out a montgomerys shop also
Correct on above except helping @ Georges... Joe is starting to lose his faculities (aka mind) so he hasn't been well lately
Not quite right Super Six....That's where Brockman Heating and Cooling was at. It set right in front of the light @ Troy & Valley. My Grandma Lived in an Apt. at the other end of the bldgs. closest to the rte. 4 entrance way
Thier is a Flowmaster rep named *****er that worked at Brockmans in those times. He is a friend of one of my friends. You might email Flowmaster and see if they will forward you email to *****er.He might have been the one who sold it new.I beleve he is semi retired in TN.
Sorry to hear about Joe.A really great guy who always had time to talk about what you were doing to your car.
Paul is a crewmember on Dakin's Top Fuel car....They are headed to Atlanta for the Southern Nationals I'll have to ask him about the Willys.....

could have bought the sam barris chopped 50 buick at leo gepharts in englewood for about the same money and about the same time frame. was in pretty sad shape but it was all there, including the safari wagon taillights laying inside.i think jim or jack walker restored it.
If you do facebook look up the KilKare Dragway memories page. Dallas Lunfords brother (Jim I think) has lunch with him every week. He can help you.
Dallas is somewhere in the Carolina's,,,try his brother Harold Lunsford. Last I talked to Harold he still has breakfast with Ohio George & some of the other guys
