I'm going for an open drivetrain on my 54 chevy. I have a line on a rear end from an '87 monte. Anyone know what hub to hub measurement it has? Too big?? I think from other posts I found that 58" to 60" works good in the '54's. Any help is much appreciated. <input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden">
right on! thanks man! <input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden">
well it's 56 backing plate to backing plate and it looks like roughly 60 hub to hub. Can't get the drums off right now to be sure.
The Monte should be OK. I just finished up "un-reversing" the rear wheels on my '51 Pontiac wagon (same as a Chev body) as the Roadmaster wagon rear I just put in it, a '92 or so, turned out to be about an inch too wide. Tires rubbed with a load on the hitch. Had to move the rims inwards on the centers, but all's well now. That axle is a bit wider than a Monte, so you should be OK. Brian
cool, many thank for that fellas. <input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden">
82-92 camaro used the same rear steelies will fit fine but if you are thinking after market aluminum rims that are offset to the outside they will rub I used a 90 camaro rear roughly 60 and then found some 79 buick riv rims they give you almost two inches offset in so you can get your wrist between them and the wheel well just something to think about for what it is worth.
Second Gen Camaro is 61.5" and Third Gen is 62" or 62.5" - Monte is narrower and has been used before.
I'm thinking yes. where can I get a good 4 link w/possibility of air bagging? <input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden">
I'm going with the original steelies and www. I'm going over to look at this rear end and verify measurements. Question: How can I verify from the outside that its a posi? He says its from an 87 ss 3:73 posi. Sounds right for the year/car and everything but I want to make sure its the real deal... <input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden">
bump for info... <input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden">
It comes on the Monte housing, as is. You'll need to fab some brackets to hold the lower control bars, and a crossmember for the short upper ones. I used the GM stock 4 link on the Caprice wagon under my '36 Fordillac, because GM is a far better ch***is engineer than I am. Use the stock coils for now, or add bags whenever.
gotcha, thanks. As you can tell I'm a novice at this. <input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden">
Nothing at all wrong with whacking the stock control arm mounts off the housing, welding on some spring pads and just bolting it to your existing springs either. WAY less work, if you're a new builder, I think I'd opt for that rather than complicated fabrication laying on your back in the driveway with weld spatters falling in your ears. Seriously. Unbolt the stock rear, pull the springs, clean 'em up, grease up between the leaves, and put it all back together. You'll need to make your own pads with the spring perch hole moved forward, (I think it's an inch and half?) as the axle on your Chevvie isn't centered over the spring bolt, owing to the torque tube set up with it's pivoting mount at the spring. Loosen there are numbers on them some place that will tell you or the easy way put it on jack stands and roll one tire and if they both go the same way posi if opposite ways one legger of course that does not tell you the gearing. The numbers will it should have a tag. I four linked my 53 chevy and bagged it. I am still putting it back together so I have not driven yet hopefully this info helps. Rusty, thanks for the measurement I think mine was 61.5 if I remember right. So the monte should be good
thanks everyone,,, I'm going to look at it tomorrow morning. Apparently its out of the car which will make it easy to go through it. <input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden">
To find out if it is a limited-slip differential spin one wheel on one side and the other side spins the same way it is a possi if it goes the oppisite way it is a "peg-leg" OR it may just need some limited-slip oil which can be bought over the counter at any GM dealership.
SWEEEEET! Just scored a 1986 Monte SS 3:73 Posi (verified)! <input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden">
