Because it's a community that's only known about hot rods from about 1970 on, many people in Cape Town associate hot rods with wackiness and zaniness, and therefore consider colours like orange and lime green and, indeed, purple especially appropriate for a hot rod. There are those on the Cape Flats who don't think it's a proper hot rod if it isn't "lekke pês" i.e. purple ...

Purple is a great color for a custom. Purple was always considered the color of royalty. I think everyone else has already covered all the best examples, and I know it was already mentioned, but take a good long look at the Joe Nitti roadster, it's almost breathtaking. I don't know if it was an exact replica, but the clone of the origional version of the Grapevine even had purple pleated heart shaped inserts in the seats by Manuel Arteche (sp?). I dare your buddies to call that car gay, and just think of the chicks you could pick up in that thing. I'm very secure in my heterosexuality, but there's a handful of PINK cars out there I would drive, and wouldn't care what anyone had to say.

it's a Harley it's naturally cool, it takes a lot to make a bike uncool. :) Bikes always look good in purple, as well as customs and hot rods, just because you don't see the color much on the street.

I notice the pictures are from the "good side" of it...not the high tech side.

I always liked that car except for the different wheels/look on each side thing...is it still like that and where is it today?

A lot of these cars have the same problems as mine, they look more blue in pics but in real life they is "fer sure" purple.

I know the show was in black and white but on Leave It To Beaver, Lumpy Rutherford drove a purple 40 Ford convert. I was going to do mine up similar at one point. I seem to remember seeing a color pic somewhere, anyone got one? It was a cool car.
Side note: Great episode where Wally and the Beav chained his rear end to a tree and it ripped out when he drove away. Quite a few years before they did it in AG.

  21. Eh, mom? Isn't that Big Olds kind of a shade of purple?

Here's a mostly finished drawing of a car that, if real, would be purple. It's a '54 Merc with a '57 Cadillac roof and tweaked Packard tail lights as I see it.

This li'l number, too, would be purple in the rel world. I took a cue from Roth's 'Tweedy Pie' but only a little:

Yes "son" but it's Ladycruser Lavander so I didn't think he'd be interested in that color choice. :D

It seems most of the really good looking purple colors are either metallic or have a peral over them.

Are there any examples of a solid purple (i.e. non metallic)?

My wife loves purple and I would love to paint our truck in a cool purple but don't want to do a metallic as my first paint job.

Main reason, I will be painting all the parts individually as I finish panels and metallics are a PITA to match, where a solid color tends to be easier. Also I plan on a single stage paint and metallics tend to be harder and don't look as good (striping, motting, etc.). I have found some really nice blues, yellows, oranges that in solid colors but would love to surprise the wife with her favorite color... for putting up with my hobby. ;)

I see. The almost sure-fire way to avoid mottling and striping is to just give it a fog coat. With metallics, spraying more doesn't necessarily "darken" the hue, the way the metallic pieces settle determine that. I find with metallics it's good to get just enough for coverage, and then if you have doubts, a good fog coat will cover any "mistakes".
