Hey guys. Does anyone know of any shops who still cut skinny whites wider? I want to get a set of radials with 5/8" whitewalls cut out to 2" white walls. Harlow tire said that they don't do it anymore. Any ideas? Thanks.
First of all you can not just say.. I want a 5/8 to now be 2" Whitewalls. It depends on the tire itself. Years ago the white area was wider under the black. Some tires have more white under there than others. The machine operator will only know after he starts cutting. You may only be able to get 1 1/4 " I did this in the 80's. we would go to the used car dealers and clean up tires for them. We also did tire clean up and regrooving on truck tires. I am not from Detroit. But i suggest you go to those Gypsy Car dealers. They will know the guys who do it. We worked out of vans back in the 80's and were Very Busy back then. The Gypsies kept us working. I do not think you will find a Major Tire Company who will do this Today. Its considered kind of shady business. Good Luck. Good Luck.
I build tires, yes, I look at the end of sidewall cuts ALL DAY LONG! Unused white rubber costs money, so 5/8ths may only go to 1". Otherwise, I'd suggest something like the firestone firehawk raised white letter, or any raised white letter tire for the width you want. I'd say 1/4" of material is under the black- so, if the letters are 1" tall, then you might have 1 1/4" to work with.
Warholick tires on Wyoming and Mcgraw will do it. They have a machinr their father built a long time ago and they can do it. They can get a nice wide white out of a cooper tire. It's a very cool old tire shop thats been there since the 30's. I would drive over and talk to them about it. Realy nice people- 4 Cooper tires, shaved, mounted and balanced $460.00
Thanks for the help man. I'm actually going to pick up a s**** skinny white and gonna it to see how whitewall I can get out of it. The tires are 155/80r13's by the way
This sorta O/T but not. My grandparents lived on Mcgraw and Proctor, drove past Warholack Tire every Sunday afternoon. The Fisk Tire Boy Statue is still standing on the roof. Did you know that the Chrysler Building across the street was the DeSoto Gl*** Plant? There was, at one time long ago, a huge neon sign on the roof that said "DESOTO GL***".
Just drove by it 10 minutes ago. It breaks my heart when I drive through the city. I am waiting to go into a meeting and staring at the Model T plant in Higland Park. I like to look at it and imagine what it used to be like. So sad to see so many of our Countries Historical Lnadmarks going to rubble
