Here are some pictures of my collection. I was born in 1945 so I have a plate from every state that had one that year. Since I come from CT I have every plate from 1909 - 1963 plus other years. Now I'm just to add older plates to the collection. The new plates have gotten out of hand.
This is a little off topic, but today I was at the DMV to renew the tags on my '66 Suburban. Short story long, the truck was originally from Cali and the guy that had it before me put period correct (blue with yellow letters) on it. But it was registered as custom plates-like twice as much money every 2 years! Kind of like having vanity plates. They're kind of beat up anyway, like my truck, and I wrinkled them more with my engine hoist the other night! So I was asking about the Pacific Wonderland reissue plates. They ended up costing the same intially, but are normal renewal prices. The best part is, I almost got the coolest plate ever. It's 9P-6665, I was like can I have the next one, PLEASE!!! I picked up a few recently, a 1915 VT porcelain plate, I got a 63 Alaska, a 1945 CA, and a 1988 Castrol Australian Road rally race car plate.
I saw one the other day that said "Liquor Kills". It was a black plate with yellow letters like a old California plate and was supposedly from the prohibition era. I've also seen an "antique car" tag that was issued in 1956.
I'm a novice plate collector, but I'm working on a 1964 run. I have roughly 75% of the plates for the US & Canada. And I'm trying for pairs in the states and Provences that had pairs that year. These are my favorite plates... These plates were never issued (NOS). The funny part? CONV doesn't mean convertible the way we'd think it would. These are plates that would have been issued to SUV's and station wagons. If anyone has a pair of black CA plates that are not clear, and they start with the letters H to M, it'd be interested in them.

Last year I bought a few cars off a farm and noticed these laying half covered up in a pile of dirt. Not sure what they were I just threw them on a shelf in the shop. I was doing some research on Tx plates this weekend and found out they were a pre-1917 make your own licence plate "kit" numbers. Can anybody tell me anything else about them??? Rare??? Worth anything??? Not looking to sell, just wanting more info.
My favorite "plate" isn't really a plate. It's a Ralph Williams License plate frame & cardboard insert. If you lived on the west coast in the 60's-70's, you should remember the guy. Big, fat loudmouth dealer that was always in trouble with state's attorney generals. He advertised late at night & on Sat. & Sun. afternoons. Chick Lambert (& his dog, a german shepherd named "Storm") was his slick talking G.S.M. check out youtube, type in Chick Lambert for a "take off" on his normal ads. Good stuff....
A lot of the foreign plates on the right side of the photo I've found in junkyards, believe it or not! There's a lot of military here and they left the plates in the trunk when they were done with the car. The KBC K912 plate is from Poland, and I got it when we went over there for a friend's wedding. The GG-HE 585 is from Belarus (former Soviet Republic) and was from a friend's car when he emigrated to the US. I found what's left of the mangled and crunched one (to the left of the Aruba plate that the in-laws brought back for me) at a traffic light. I couldn't believe how mangled that it was, so I had to circle back to get it. The oval plate is from Germany and my uncle brought that one back. The "Volvo Export London" plate came from a friend who worked at a Volvo dealership back in the 80's. If I remember correctly, he told me that they all had the Export plates installed when they arrived at the dealership and they usually just threw them away when they prepped the car. Why new Volvos would have UK plates on them...??? The "71" plate is something that I got for my 71 Road Runner from the Chicagoland Mopar Connection car show at the Belvedere Assembly plant back in 1996. It is a real & legal plate, but for a limited period of time, like a month or so. We auctioned off the numbers and luckily I got 71 for my car. The VUK3 and VUK4 were sort of an homage to my uncle. He had five kids and when they all became teenagers and wanted their own phones (living at home, back in the 70's before cell phones) he got them XXX-8851 (Vuk 1) through XXX-8855 (Vuk 5) to make it easier to remember each of their kid's phone numbers. When they started driving they ordered custom license plates VUK 1 through VUK 5 for their first cars. When I moved to Virginia (the second time) I called the phone company and asked if I could have "8853" in any of the exchanges in our area (they did!) and I also ordered VUK3 and VUK4 for me and my wife's car. Yes, the FASTER plate caused a lot of trouble. At almost EVERY red light. I found the 999 plate in a junkyard in Richmond, but only ONE was on the car. I WISH that I could have found the second one! TSGMI8 was my plate when I worked at Mopar City and was driving an Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera (huge pile o' crap, but it was almost free, so...). You could read it either "This GM I hate" or "'Tis GM I hate". Don't know why someone in HAWAII would prefer VIRGINIA, but... I mean, I like Virginia a lot, that's why I moved here twice, but still.

Does anybody know if there's an American company doing some real embossed metal licence plates with the customer's choice of letters and numbers ? Knowing that I'm not interested in any modern style plates, but rather in the classic 1956 yellow and black California plates, or anything vintage. These would be for a hot rod driving around in Europe. Thanks
there is but for the life of me i cannot find the link!! what you do is pay them to take a new license plate number and stamp it into an older looking plate! its cool cause they have every era of plate. god i wish i could find the link!!!
I have a '38 (?) Arizona copper plate from when my grandparents moved out there, and some small "key chain" plates from the early 60's. IIRC they are from an insurance co, and of course,the only year I am missing is the year of my truck! David
Just recently started collecting 1951 plates, but I only have about 7 so far. Mostly looking to do all 48 states, at least at first. Might add in territories and Canadian plates later.
heres my mst recent additions to my collection,,,picked up this box of rust err plates at a swap meet for $15 bucks..included were a pair of cal 56 and cal 38 plates,,all of them have "condition" issues but hey i cant beat the price
I was collecting 1936 license plates at least one for each State. I guess my pride and joy is an Alaska 1936 plate was hard to come by. I also have all Canadian Provinces in 1936 with the exception of the Northwest Territories, not sure if cars were evn there in 1936??? I also have a 1936 Philippines and 1939 Mexico plate. I have my set of 1936 plates so I have kinder over it now. My oldest plate is NY 1915.
Wow, I missed your post! I like that plate, I bet lots of people wouldn't get it, though. As for my "BOYDWHO" plate...Denise has the match to it. Now that I live in a different province I'm debating getting that as a plate for my Essex.
