Thanks to a fellow HAMBer, I've purchased my dream car! A 1937 Nash Lafayette 2dr. I fell in love with this car when I saw one in Rod and Custom a few years back. I have never actually seen one in person. I've seen a handful of 4drs at car shows over the years, but never a 2dr. These are VERY rare cars. I love the unique fat fender 2drs. I plan on having this car the rest of my life! It already has a V8 in it. Just a few small changes to come, lower the front end a couple of inches. Anyone have any insight on removing leafs out of the leaf spring in front? Which leafs should I remove first? I'm stoked!
If you want to remove leafs, I would start by removing the smallest ones first. If you remove 2 or maybe 3 that should lower it about an inch or so.
You may lower it that way, but the front spring are likely to become mushy, I would be concerned with it wallowing in corners. Sure, it's not a sports car, but I would hesitate to make any change that may erode the handling. As another posted, a drop axle may be a better idea. Are the springs over or under the axle?
That thing is in beautiful shape. Has it had a restoration or is it origional? If origional it has sure led a pampered life. Frank
Thanks for all the help Chuck! Wouldn't have felt comfortable with the deal without you checking it out for me!!! Will do! Older restoration, but in good shape. Has a early sixties small block chevy look (although it's a 350, not a 283 or 327). Has the 327 Camel Hump heads. Just what I was looking for!
I'd do a lot of research before I started messing with the front end on that car. It will have its own characteristics which may, or may not, respond to the more common treatments. For example, removing leaves may not be a good idea for the very reason mentioned above - too soft for good handling. For a mild drop, consider having the stock spring pack dearched instead. This gives stock characteristics and a lower stance. You might also find a spring shop that will make you new springs with a slightly softer rate (the Chevy probably weighs less than the original motor) and less arch. Nice car!
***us drops axles. And I agree . . . all that car needs is a good lowering all the way around. Very nice!
