So my move to Texas is coming up quick. I wanted to see if anyone had any pointers and/or advice regarding trailering my engineless 53 Plymouth behind a Penske or Uhaul moving truck. Anyone done this before? Im worried that there is no weight in the front of the trailer compared to the rear due to no engine. Any advice would be great.
HEY mike, it's vinny. wishing you the very best of luck on your move bro !!!!!!!!!! trailering that should be no problem at all ! we will miss you around here at all the shows ! let me know if you need a hand with anything. vinny
One thing in your favor is that you will be towing with a bigger truck, that always helps. Just try to get it as far farward on the trailer as you can so you do have a couple hundred pounds of tongue weight. I trailered an engine less car one time, it was noticeably difficult to handle however I was towing with a light pickup, going a short distance, and didn't have the car to the front of the trailer.
If you do, or anyone does, put a car on a trailer backwards, make sure the doors are latched tight, and locked if possible......ask me how I know.
put the car on the trailer nose first. the truck is plenty big enough to handle it or they wouldnt rent it with a trailer. secure the car to the trailer so the suspension is pulled tight so the car is basicly one with the trailer. you dont want the car to bounce on the trailer. if you have to, stop at home depot and get some extra tie down straps and secure the car well. i have trailered plenty of cars and the getting them tight to the trailer is key.
jam all your other heavy **** in the engine compartment and shut the hood..?welders, intakes, heads, maybe an engine block? or the mother in law?
Thanks for the information. I planned on using extra tie downs. the car is my baby and I want her to get to TX in one piece. My dad is taking the road trip with my while my wife takes our off topic car with her father. So we arent in a rush and Ill just do a normal speed.
The front clip is completely taken apart. fenders are inside the car. The hood is in the truck. if i could find a early 50s mopar bell housing for my poly engine close by I would put the engine in the car.
can you still fill the cavity? and tie the stuff down or shore it up in there so it dont move? on a side note..big enough truck tongue weight shoudnt be much of a problem..heavy ***ed trailers(as in more weight out back than up front) have a tendancy to want to waggle on down hills..so putting something up front is good thinking
If you are putting the car on a good dual axle trailer built to haul cars, not a lawn trailer like you see alot of guys using you shouldn"t have any problems at all, just strap down the front real tight to take the bounce out of the suspension.Have a good trip.
The trailors from those guys **** as far as getting the weight balanced! Most of the time they end up tongue heavy with the car on forwards Sooooooooooo, you will be better off actually w/o an engine and the car on nose first! Hauling my 54 home from Denver is how I know this.
When you get settled, if in central Texas send me a PM. I know a place in Thrall Texas where I get all of the parts that I need for my 48 P-15. There is also a place in Seguin that has quite a few old MoPars. I usually post over on the P-15-D-24 Forum site under the same name I use here. I am not sure but I think you and Vinny are both members there also. You will love Texas after living in NJ. I know several who made the trip 25 years ago and will never return but to visit.
Or you could lock a bunch of your heavy stuff in the trunk and back it on. That rental truck will handle the trailer OK. Make sure your tire pressures are right on the trailer before you start. Then stop after a while and feel the trailer tires . If the rear ones feel a lot hotter than the fronts , the trailer load weight is too far to the rear. A floor jack kept handy and a mounted spare trailer tire makes things easier.. AND always ck the trailer wheel nuts before starting outwith a strange trailer.
I just moved my 49 chevy minus engine from santa cruz ca to protland or early this year. pulling was not an issue and I even had a bunch of stuff inside the car as well. although my hood came off. make sure your latch is secure!!!!!! Where is Gmann on this one.hehe. I pulled it behind a 26 foot Penske with one of their trailers. would do it again no problem. Good Luck Eric
