It can be done, but why not get a paint gun for $100 or so? If you must use cans, get your local paint shop to mix it and put it in a can with a fan spray nozzle. The round pattern ones are harder to get decent results with.
I've seen it done, had a customer that went to the paint store in San Jose and ordered automotive acrylic enamel (from the color sheet) to be pressure-installed in spray cans. It was costly, (15 cans!) but he painted the whole Datsun with them...It actually looked good! A guy around the corner from my house painted a Land Rover with pale yellow Krylon spray cans. He hung the doors, front grille surround, rear gate, and other removable parts from the open garage door, painted everything one-at-a-time, and when finished it looked like a factory job. Get a gun. You'll be glad you did.
My plan is to spray paint my truck and I imagine that it is going to take a great deal of cans. In response to the two statements of "get a gun", that is certainly the best way, but from what i've found the gun is only part of the equation. A compressor to handle painting a car is not cheap
Wisconsin? I Lived in Wisconsin and My Brother in Law told me that he would paint my car with spray cans. I only had to pay for 12 cans of paint and 2 cases of Beer. He said Hey Dude thats a Deal.... Hmmmmmmmmm I decided not to take him up on the offer, But I did see his car that he painted with Spray cans . Yes the more beer you drink the better it looks. Well Maybe he drank 2 cases of beer before he started. Hey I am not trying to laugh at anyone here. This is a True Story. I know it is possible, Just takes a special person to do it right. Good Luck !
Montana makes very good spray paint and has a palette of colors that would make Bob Ross envious. http://www.jerrysartarama.com/disco...-and-Caps/Montana-GOLD-Artist-Spray-Paint.htm ...but you might also want to look in to hi-dens foam rollers. http://www.rickwrench.com/index79master.htm?http://www.rickwrench.com/50dollarpaint.html
ive seen great results with the high quality fan tips. When i was stationed in Japan you could buy factory colors in cans with real nice fan tips. i painted a couple cars for guys with them. they didn't believe i did it with cans till they saw all the empty cans. don't know how long the paint would have lasted because drifting cars don't live long get a gun and RENT a compressor if you have to you will thank yourself in the long run
i painted mine with the krylon can with the fan tip. it turned out pretty good for the most part. with some more work and clear coat it should be able to shine
We used Rustoleum flat black, bought by the quart and thinned out and used a spray gun and it came pretty nice and the paint is cheap and durable. Painted the car for $35. I've also heard of people using tractor paint comes in a lot of colors and is durable as hell!
Use rustoleum. that shit in a spray can flows super nice and is tough as hell. A little wet sanding and some 3m perfect it and you will have a shiney car.
<<<<<<<<< I did my wagon with Industrial Rustoleum--Hunter Green and Almond. Its not bad. Works until I get a shop or garage. Tried tried using a gun once but the neighbors complained.
I have painted several cars with a small Sears compressor and they turned out nice. The best way is to rent a spray booth that furnishes the gun and compressor.
you dont need a lot of compressor if youre using an HVLP gun, harbor Freight guns are $40 on sale and Ive shot a lot of paint with them. Trouble with spray cans is you cant add hardener so any rock will blow your paint away. Ive used the pre loaded cans provided by paint supply stores, very costly by the time you'd do a whole car and once again, no hardener. The Summit racing line of paint and a Harbor Freight gun and youll be good to go. use Industrial enamel and youre even less $, the enamel takes a long time to cure though. Search ebay for automotive paint, theres a seller with $30 gallons of paint probalby close to industrial enamel. Ive used it before on exterior doors for a shop, 5 yrs and its still glossy, never waxed the shop door
My uncle is the king of spray cans. He once painted a 750 chopper with spray cans and won a trophy at the freakin fair. Not for paint though. But it did look pretty damn good. You couldnt tell. It was a metallic rasberry color.
I am sure we all have at one time. When I was still a kid, Me, my brother, and his friend taped up his friends chevette and spray bombed it yellow. Hell on the trigger finger. Not neccessarily cheap, Being there is not a lot of material in a spray bomb, and it is thin and coverage won't be the greatest, and unactivated paint you get in a spray bomb probably won't be the most durable or fade resistant. I think you would be better off truefully to try to find someone who might agree to paint it reasonably on the side if you don't have the equiptment. Or possibly there is a reasonable night course in auto body at a local school. This would give you access to the schools expensive equiptment, and an instructor for some hands on guidance, and you learn something new. It doesn't neccessarily take a lot of compressor though. When starting out I painted a couple cars when I was younger with a 3 hp 20 gal and a sharpe 775 gun. Believe the previous poster has it wrong though. Most hvlps are air hogs, and require a decent sized compressor to keep up doing a full vehicle and spray and atomize correctly. Most conventional guns on the other hand have modest air requirements, and should be able to get a pretty decent one cheaply, although you waste more material in overspray from the higher pressure out the nozzle. But who cares that much if you don't do a ton of painting. Even with a conventional, you should be able to spray an average sized car with about a mixed gallon of paint. Do protect yourself with proper ventilation, and skin, eye and lung protection. Any paint or chemical is not good for you to be exposed to, but if spraying activated products, it imparative you protect yourself well.
Here's one we did at the wrecking yard I work at, to use as a sign. 5 Rednecks and 17 cans of Wal-Mart $1.19 red and a couple black. Here's a youTube time lapse of "the build" http://www.youtube.com/v/N_bukWpf7ms
Dont do it!!! If its worth doing half assed, Its worth doing half assed right. Buy a gallon of nason, omni, or some other cheap single stage WITH A CATYLIST. If it aint got a hardner, ait aint worth a shit. just my 2pennys
i bought 3 cases of "TRUE VALUE" laquer spray bombs 20 years ago. used it to shoot my 71 maverick 4dr turned into a 2dr. took 3 weeks. shot a panel at at a time. 5-6 coats on each panel. lots of wet-sanding, didn't look half bad, but i had to keep it waxed. just a dumb-ass kid, doing what he could. wish i was smart enough to transfer my hard copies to j-peg.
