If you canb get it squeaky clean - every nook and cranny - then solder it. Use lead/tin solder and the kind of flux that looks like a paste - what you use for plumbing - Nokorrode is one brand. Use your Benzomatic torch and don't get it too hot. If the solder just melts and runs away it is too hot. You should be able to wash the entire welded area with solder.

After that is done, clean off the flux with acetone and if there are any suspicious looking pits either resolder using almost no heat (just enough to barely melt the solder - and repeat repeat repeat.

If you are still nervous after that, wash and clean again and wash over THAT with JBWeld or MarineTex. This is overkill but if you don't trust any portion of the weld then this is one approach.

BTW your fishing weights are lead only and you wantsome tin in there.

that soldering is a pain in the butt you hold the torch in the wrong angle it shuts off:(
i heated it too much and the filler neck came off the factory seal so i had to re attach that :(
i had one small hole i wanted to tac weld shut and it keep getting bigger even with the slightest touch of the mig :(
im going to just take it to a radiator shop and ask how much it would cost to have them do it :( i really wish i could fab everything myself its so much fun
im bummbed out but i know i have to have a professional do it right the first time i dont wanna be cruising and spilling gas down the road:eek:

Bro everytime I look at your post it seems like your getting closer to the finish line. I'm almost finished with my chop on my 48 DeSoto. Its all the small shit that makes it seem like it will never end. I got to keep taking pics to make myself feel like I'm accomplishing something.

I saw this post too late. The acid core solder is not as easy to work with and the lead free solder really makes things challenging. Lead free is the new standard for plumbing because of concerns that the lead in soldered joints can leach into the drinking water - not good. But lead free solder does not work as well as you see (you are not sweating solder into a joint but painting it onto a panel - more like leading a seam than soldering a pipe).

As you found out it is easy to get things too hot. In my experience the temperature range between solid and liquid is too abrupt with lead free solder. Lead solder has a temp range where it is plastic so you can work it where it needs to be.

Sorry it did not work out for you. Hopefully a rad shop will only charge $20 or so.

Glad to see someone bringing an old plymouth back to life. Looks like you are defiantly giving it a good go and aren't scared of a bit of rust. The 47 Plymouth is my all time favorite. My old man has had one in the family for 35 years.
    Keep up the good work.

Hey Joel, I took my 47 Windsor to a car show Saturday. It was great getting it out and talking to the people. We all have slumps, so just walk away for a bit and start in fresh.
Your friend's car is sweet! Here is one of my friend's SS.

I just took an hour and read your whole post. I want to thank you, you are an inspiration to myself and I know many involved in HAMB. Your perseverance is amazing... Against all odds, you have done an amazing job. I just told my wife about your car, she said it is a spiritual message, ever hear about Joshua and Caleb, they believed God and got it done. The other ten Israelis, whined and cried and complained and so on. That story is still about hearts today.
I am building a 37 Ford Truck. I just started and am also working out side under a Costco portable garage. I will NOT whine, because I have seen what you have done.
I am learning to weld, I am inspired by your welding improvements, I now have little fear of fabricating, because of your way of just doing things.
    Again,
THANK YOU, I am blessed to see this, keep it coming, I cant wait to see you and family cruising around the great NY.......:D
