I had the day off work today and it turned out to be a really good day. Went to lunch and was minding my own business not hurting anyone, then next thing you know I was buying an old car with fantastic patina. All I did was ask the owner if he still had that old Hudson and he said "yes, you want to buy it?" and I simply said "yes." I followed him home and paid him. I had never driven one of these step down Hudsons with the big six before and was I ever in for a nice surprise. What a torque monster! I hit the open road and began the 20 miles drive home. Faster and faster I drove, the old Hudson never hesitating as it sped along passing cars like they were sitting still. 60, 70 80, faster and faster !! The telephone poles looked like a picket fence along the roadside as my wife struggled to keep up with me in our late model daily driver. Wow---what a nice handling and driving car with great brakes and feeling of control. I don't know--- it's just an old unrestored car, not some famous Kustom or historical hot rod. I'll let the photos tell the rest of the story: <center>

Thats an awesome looking Hudson, has a 53 hood ornament on it. Wait till you drive one with a little bit of work done to them and they flat get with it for what they are, congratulations on the new ride.

I never tell what I pay! It wasn't a high priced car though. Fully loaded with 262 cubic inch engine with optional power dome 500 head, overdrive, tissue dispenser, radio, map light, and etc. New BF Good rich tires too.

  9. Amen to that! What a car cost someone is NO one's business!

Exceptional choice! A Stepdown Hudson is probably THE best road car of the Fifties, bar-none! I dub thee "Scruffy", if you are a car-namer.

    I've owned six Stepdowns - '53 Wasp, '50 Commodore 8, '50 Pacemaker coupe, '53 Hornet, '54 Hornet, '51 Super.

Wow what a great score - see guys all you got to do is ask, sometimes one question, sometimes many. Luck rarely plays much part in it at all.

    Love your work Pov.
So ... Polish the stainless and chrome and drive ?
I think you'll have to find a nice hat to go with this one ... and maybe a cigar ... :D

  21. I like hearing about a good deal on a car I like.

Those are nice pics. Let's see some interior shots, and some action shots, such as sliding sideways on that dirt road.

    Much rust?

Beautiful pics..you can't get patina much nicer than that...it looks totally unmolested. It takes me back to driving my dad's '49 Coomodore 6 back in the 60's. It makes ya feel kind of invincible!

Looks good and solid. The Kansas climate doesn't do old tin much harm.

Sounds like you were at the right place at the right time.

I spent a lot of time watching things go by at 80 mph in my uncles, bought new, 49 Comadore Brougham. Some miles over a 100. 262 3sd OD.

I need to get it out and drive it again.

Those Hudsons are cool just theway they are......they look chopped & lowered allready! Nice score. Love it!

  28. A Mercury can only HOPE to look as good as a Hudson!

What's funny is that the Stepdown style Hudson debuted in October 1947 as a 1948 model car, just two full years after postwar auto production started back up. The restyled 1949 Mercury came out a full year later, in October 1948. Yet, some out there actually think that Hudson copied Mercury in the styling! (Inability to look at a calendar notwithstanding!). The Hudsons need no chop, that's for certain!
