I've got a Uncle who kept my dads 57 Chevy in storage for me when he p***ed on when i was a kid and helped me get it running when I was old enough to drive. He's been really great to me and I'd like to give back some now that he's getting a little older. I've been thinking of some car events we've never been to but always read about and was wondering what some of ya'll who have been thought of them. Bonneville Speed week looks great but I'm wondering how it would be if you weren't actually running. The Fathers Day Roadster show in LA is another idea I've had and it would be fitting seeing how he's been like a father to me. The third idea I've had is a trip to Hershey for the swap meet since thats the one thing we have done a lot of just never to that one. Any thoughts and am I leaving any other events out?
I've never been to any of them, but it seems as though the fathers day roadster show seems the most suiting. That was pretty awesome of him to do that for you, holding that car all those years and helping you work on it.
I haven't missed a Hershey meet since 1969. Bonneville and the LA Roadster Show have been Bucklet List events for well over 35 years now, I really wonder if I'll get to either now. I think the LA Roadster Show would be #1 for me.
Bonniville is the best event I have every been too. You should be prepared with shade and a car you can drive on the salt. It is miles between the starting line and observation areas. This is the best of speed, and car shows all in one. On the other hand if real hot rod parts and large swap meets are your thing, La is 11 miles of vintage hot rod parts plus a great car show. Pick one and do-it you won't regret it.
Done B'ville many times...the Chevy has been on the salt at least 7 of those times and washed good when i get home....hasn't rotted away so far....You need to DO THAT ONE! ( once?; can't do just one!!) Fathers Day LA was OK and has a pretty decent swap too... never done Hershey but if you're looking for whatever, guess you'd find it.... You have the right at***ude for sure..Payback and have fun at the same time...Good for you !
Good move to do that, what a great present. I'd suggest that you tell him that you are going to do this and why. Give him no wiggle room, ie. too expensive, you don't have to do that and so forth. Tell him it is a done deal and ask him to pick an event. He may want to go to an event that you'd never think of, for example a drivig school for both of you or something like that. Maybe he's always wanted to go to the Daytona 500 or the bike rally in Sturgis. Like I said, ask him.
The Turkey Rod Run in Daytona on Thanksgiving weekend is an awesome event. Thousands of cars of all different variety.
1. get muddy at the showdown, check this one off till i do it again!! 2.pull wheellie at showdown drags, need to work on this!! 3,get salt fever at bonneville, sounds like next years road trip with so-what gang!!
Do something together with the car- but as participants, not spectators. Something big like Hot Rod Magazine's Power Tour... or something local like a grudge night at your local dragstrip or poker run.
