I'm not an expert on Iowa plates, but according to the book, "License Plate County Codes of the United States & Canada", in 1939, Iowa used a numerical code prefix to designate a particular county (i.e. "61-****" was issued to residents of Madison County). Since numerical prefixes were used for county designation, I would venture to guess the "D" on your plate means the plate was issued to a Dealer. I'll let someone more familiar with Iowa plates tell if I'm right or wrong.

I would say thats fair. The biggest issue with dealer plates is you cant register them, so you take all the guys wanting YOM plates out of the bidding. Cool plate though.

I don't have a plate rare enough to send him, looks like he does great work.
