My 350 will kick down at a stand still or very low speed and got through the gears no problem but will not kick down at anything ove 5 or 10 mph. I put on a new modulator but am not sure which way to turn the adjustment screw to solve the problem if that is what is causing it. Which direction do I turn the screw to get it to kick down at higher speeds? Is there anything else I should look at that might be causing the problem? Thanks for any help.
If the shift points are correct and smooth the modulator(throttle)valve and govenor pressure are O.K. If kickdown is the issue then the cable's effect on the boost cap is incorrect. See if the cable is broke or out of adjustment.
what is the proper way to attach/adjust that cable to the carb...just getting ready to do that as well...
There are any number of aftermarket, and factory brackets to get the cable secured to the manifold or carb. I customarily set the cable so that it is all the way out at full throttle, and then fine tune (slacken) from there.
On a Th350 either push down or pull up the adjuster depending on the vintage of the cable and open the carb to WOT, done. On a 700R4 or 4L60 this will only get you in the ballpark and more tweaking will be required.
Just trying to understand how things work. Why would it kick down at a stand still if the cable was out of adjustment but would not kick down at speed. I will admit I don't have much knowledge of this subject so any help understanding it will be appreciated. Thanks for all the replies.
It does not kick down standing still,it downshifts on the way to standing still. Different way to get to the same place. Standing still and slowing there is no/low governer pressure. There are many books on the 350 that are written for Hot Rodders and amature mechanics. They are usually very well written and understandable.
Thanks Canman makes sense to me. I'll check the cable adjustment and maybe look for one of those books.
Thanks to everyone for the advice. It was the cable. Made an adjustment so it gets pulled out an additional 1/4" and the problem was solved. Kicks down great now. Thanks again
