Well we picked up a Model A last weekend and drug it home and change the wheels and tires. I have been greasing and getting everything loose for this weekend. I wanted to see if we could get the ole' gal fired up. So I pulled the head earlier in the week to find it full of a mouse nest. So clean/shopvac-ed it and soaked it in Marvel Mystery Oil and everything loosend up. So I got the wire brush on the drill and "Polished" the head while my dad "Honed" it with fine grit sand paper. We got the head back on and check the starter and it needed a little oil also, got it back installed. I borrowed a few items from my pops Model A roadster p/u and I cranked it about 4 times and "clackety/clackety/clack" it runs. So we tried it a couple more times while laughing and hooting. So we decided to take it on a cruise out of the garage. I drove her about 50 feet to the end of the driveway (no brakes) and backed it back in to the garage. My dad also drove it and backed her. We both had chicken skin on are arms after words and cracked open a "Beer" and toasted the day. Here are a few pix of the days events. Oh yea, and we started on it around 11am and she fired around 3pm.

    Engine full of stuff.....

Got the Head back on with the ole' Model A book...Question: How much do you torque the heads on a Model A?

What a great way to spend a day. You and your dad working together. Then to get it fired up to. Sounds like a 12 pack day to me. I guess the mice did not like it much [IMG]

Sodbuster, you torque the head to 55 foot lbs. Start at 45, then redo at 50, then finally 55. Drive it around to operating temperature then check them at 55 lbs again. There is a sequence to the torqueing. You'll need to get a Model A book with a good diagram on the sequence. Also don't use the gasket for the water filler neck, just use blue RTV silicone sealer. The torqueing with the gasket can break the ears off the filler neck. Keith

I laughed at first but then started thinking....could you imagine ALL the people that would love to see that....Restorers, resto-rodders and even them "rat rodders" would be stopping you all the time wanting to buy it....tell them exactly what they do not want to hear.

Tell the restorers that you gonna build a rat rod out of it the day it finally breaks down.

Tell the rat rodders that you are going to restore it the day it finally breaks down.

I don't say this too much because I think it's trite, but you should really chop the **** out of that thing. Leave the fenders, leave it stock height, but just hammer the dog**** out of the roof and drop the headlights down a bit. I think it would look cool anyway....and yes I think it's cool as it sits too.

Yea, that is the plan. Just get it rolling and stopping and make everything "road safe" and drive the heck out of it. We were thinking about cutting the top off and making a touring out of it, maybe in the future. Kind of like that touring that was covered in old HOTROD covers, but I mentioned an idea to my dad about a "nose" with full fenders and it looks very cool.

Top? what top. It has the old plywood top that is covered in canvas and roofing tar and about 3 layers thick. It did tear a sunroof on the p***enger side after it was on the highway. But I am going to leave it just as is. I do need cut some wood for bracing in the top (it only has one), looks like I will be making a roadtrip to St.Louis where my father-in-law has a full wood shop.

Headlights? not right now. Taillights? Yes.

So the next step is Brakes and getting the radiator hooked up and getting it ***led/tagged with insurance.

Oh yea, I fired it up for the wife last night and I think I saw her grin. And then she asked if we could make it into a roadster and if it was going to Bonneville?

  25. Chris, have I mentioned that was the most obscene deal I've heard yet? Good Job. Has the belly tank been put on hold?
