the gf decided she wants to build my 53 chevy 3600, we are going to put it on an s-10 frame and put a 5.3/4l60e in it (for the reliability aspect, afterall it is for the gf ). i have everything figured out except a couple of things. 1) i know there is a company that makes a unit to convert electronic speedo transmissions to cable driven but i cant remember the campany's name. (its not the abbott place that comes up in a google search, their product just looks cheap) does anyone know what company i am thinking of? 2) converting everything from 6-12 volts will be fairly simple (but if anyone has any advice about doing it please share, any and all advice is greatly appreciated), speedometer is addressed above, fuel and volt gauges are easy enough. how about the factory oil pressure and temp gauges? could i use the 1953 factory style sensors on the 5.3 to make the gauges work or is there another way to do this? 3) can i use my factory steering column or will i need to use the s-10 column? the truck wont have cruise control or any of that **** and she doesnt need tilt so i cant see why i would NEED the s-10 column. i'm sure i will come up with more questions later, i will post them as they come to me.
you can see some steering column ideas in here http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=447572
i saw that thread but i was dead tired when i was looking at it and missed the steering column part. thank you.
Shiftworks offers the tailhousing kits that allow you to run a mechanical cable-driven speedo. I bought one for a 4L70E swap into a '64 Tempest, it allows me to keep my stock speedo and have the advantages of the using the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) to run cruise control. They're not cheap. http://shiftworks.com/tailhousing.htm
thats not the exact one i was thinking of but its pretty much the same thing. thank you thanks, i still have a lot of work to do on it (and some stuff i want to redo) but it sure is fun to drive.
Cable-X is another less reliable alternative, an electric motor that drives your original cable-driven speedo. $300 for the Cable-X versus $500 for the Shiftworks tailshaft, I picked what I thought would make it on the long-haul.
