several people have stated in this post that it is "just a car". really? my daily is just a car... my old stuff has never been "just a car". I think you guys may be missing something. are you saying if someone else totalled your car you wouldn't care?

I hope all you guys letting others drive your old car have read your insurance policy in depth.

no one is driving my stuff unless it is some sort of incident where I am unable to drive it myself and it needs to be somewhere else. just for fun? nope. with me not in it? an exrtra large nope.

I'm not missing something, in fact I think your missing a great joy in life. One that involves letting others experience this great hobby in the same way you do, by driving something cool even if for only one drive.

If you think that a car can't be replaced your wrong. To me building a car is almost more fun than driving it. That's why I keep selling and building them, not to make money but rather the joy of making something.

Personally I could care less if the car get totaled at the hand of someone else, it could of happened to me just as easy. It gets scratched or dented so what I drive them and they get scratched and dented that's what they were made to do, not sit on a trailer or in a garage and look pretty. Besides I've found that most people who drive my cars are WAY to nervous to do anything stupid, in fact they drive it better than I do.

As far as insurance, don't know about yours but mine covers the car no matter who drives it. And to boot if I drive someone elses car its covered. I've already checked into it. Needless to say I have great insurance.

nobody has ever asked me - for my close friends, who many I consider closer than my own family, I would gladly toss them the keys, yet I dunno, seems they're all scared to ask- I take any an all out for a spin...

my cars are very special to me, but they're just that - cars.
GF(soon to be wife) flat out refuses to.

    It's just a car, but it's my car! :D
No they can't. My insurance stipulated that. They can get their own hot rod. A good friend wouldn't ask. I would never ask a friend of mine to let me drive their pride and joy. It's theirs.

You can borrow my wife to accompany you to dinner, but leave my tools and car alone...........

So since you posted this, have you changed your mind 49ratfink? It IS much more than driving, it is the build, people you meet, challenge, search, shows, parties, the saving, the endless nights working, all those things involved and much more. Still, if someone asked for the keys to my truck and I trusted them, I would toss em over. It's just who I am. I take no offense to someone wanting to experiance it or enjoy it, I find it a compliment that someone would want to drive my old truck around. It may be my pride and joy, but without my friends and family none of this is worth it...so why not let them enjoy too? At least thats my take.

Jim, you are a true humanitarian...

I let my friends drive my cars as long as they're sober - my Harley not so much, like never.

I've only let a couple of my friends drive my cars. They've been involved with the project and have kustoms or hot rods of their own. My wife has never asked for the keys of any of my old cars, ever. My rod, well, that's a topic for another thread....

Shooting the keys to someone who's not used to older cars is asking for trouble in my opinion. The learning curve from driving late model cars to a 1949 Ford with a 3spd column shift, a sloppy steering box, floor pedals, bias ply tires and drum brakes in Toronto ON traffic is not something I want to let people do with my ride sorry. If I lived in the country it may be a different story.

I have a handful of buddies (the ones into hot rods, etc) that I'd let drive it.
Of course my Dad has drove it, he's the one who got me into this madness. My wife wants to drive it but she scared to.

My wife has driven my truck twice.....both times bad things happened. Once, the shock bolt came out, the shock fell between the front caliper and frame and the brakes wouldn't work, but only on the perfect right turn, which was the first turn as she was leaving school. Next time someone tried to back over her in the Lowe's parking lot. It is karma for all the shit she talked about "The Other Woman" (my truck).

  19. Depends on who is asking. If my friends Rick, Scott G, Scott S, or a handful of other people (who'd let me drive THEIR cars & trucks at a moment's notice), no problem whatsoever. I KNOW that they'll treat it well and will be careful with it.
However, a recent aquaintance of mine, younger kid with a pretty cool old truck and I thought that I could be a good influence on, BEGGED me to take out my (OT) 71 Road Runner out to impress a girl... I reluctantly say yes and he takes it out one Friday night back in October. He overinflated the HELL out of the tires "because they LOOKED low" and popped the right front (luckily just after exiting the interstate). Tore up the tire, and the flapping rubber beat the crap out of the otherwise nice & rust free fender. Thank God Hagerty covers damage done by others as long as they had permission to drive it!!! A miracle worker of a body man straightened the fender and we located another tire to match what I had on the car. Story's over right? Nah.
The kick in the ass part of the story is that the kid never really apologized to me, and kinda disappeared for about 6 months after the tire & fender deal. One night I'm out cutting the grass and working on some stuff in the garage and I realize that he has been blowing up my phone all night with text messages and voice messages and says that he REALLY wants to talk to me. I call him and he asks to come over "even though it is kinda late". I say "sure" figuring that he is going to FINALLY apologize or offer something to square us up again... NOOOoooo My ass about fell off of the bar stool when he quickly aplogizes and then ASKS IF HE CAN TAKE THE CAR OUT AGAIN!!!! I still think that he's trying to get my boot out of his ass...
