So there I am out at Bonneville last summer when I get introduced to our own Elmo Rodge. He's a long, thin guy with about 547 white, shiny teeth, shades and a white pith helmet. He shows me his car and I'm blown. It's an old original looking 36 ford 2 door sedan, complete with wide five wheels and when I asked if he was running 39 ford brakes, he smiled and said he still had the original 36 cable brakes....no pesky fluid to top off. I asked him about the flathead and he said he came across a new 283...complete with the 2 barrel carb. We cruised around the pits together and I got up beside him [in my 41 Pontiac] and got some good video of him driving the old 36. Imagine my surprise when I open up my last issue of Street Rodder [they're gonna cancel me for non-payment] to see ol' Elmo hisself in the "4 pack" part of the rag. Gave him a nice write-up with 4 different photos...all taken at 'the salt" last summer. If Mrs Rocky wasn't using our only scanner right now, I'd copy adn post a photo.... Congrats, Wayno!
Thanks for the heads up Rocky. The salt is the only place I can picture him at. It was a pleasure to meet him at B'ville 2003. I'll have to head to the bookstore and pickup a copy. I'll drag it out to the salt next time and have him sign it! Congrats on the coverage bud!
Was he wearing the pith helment with the chopped top? I met Wayno on a HAMB relay when when he snuck into Texas and spirited that nice car back to Kallyfonya couple years ago.
I caught that as well Rocky. The car is super cool and Wayno is too. His statement about me was that I didn't piss him off and everyone pisses him off. I musta done good. See ya on the Salt Wayno!
I especially like the feature that no one has mentioned. The sleeping facilites, or cot that took the place of a p***enger/back seat. I guess he thought there were no more rooms in Austin, NV this year!! I also like the fact that "ELMO" packed the car using a shovel!! Oh and it does have headlights...a bump fixed that!! Bring Carl with you and we'll meet at the gas station next year..don't forget the "fix a flat". HA HA
FYI for the cheapskates or remotely located: there is a readable scan of this on the MSN flathead site. Mike
Not sure if the link will work or not........ http://www.msnusers.com/FordFlathead1932to1953/msgattachments/2961 Congrats Elmo.......
It works for me.........if it does not work for everyone else I will try to link it in the a.m. Chris Nelson Kansas
Fun stuff, huh? I heard about the article on Thursday and just got in the door from a plane trip to New Jersey. Finally saw it. Lemme tell ya. In the last 35 years or so I've gotten a fair amount of ink, including plenty of covers. This one is by far the most fun because i can share it with a bunch of friends I've made here and on the Flathead forums. How cool is that? Wayno
Yeah, but the clincher for me was a regular at the shop today that was describing the feature. I said, "Oh, you mean Wayne? Nice guy, drives the **** out of his cars." Proud to have met you Elmo!
