I have only ever been to Speed Week for the first weekend and I know it's the time to be there. I'm planning a LONG circuitous road trip in the Legion Special that I'd like to include Bonneville. The bummer is that I can't make it until that Wednesday.

My question is how many people are still there mid-week. I know it depends on breakdowns etc, but input would be great. I don't want to add 700 miles (or whatever) to my trip for no reason.

    Thanks!

Everyday ON the salt is a GOOD day....anyone trying for that record is glad there's still a few days left! I'd come if I were within 700 miles...hey wait, I am...!! Seeyou there!

  3. I should be there, but only in a helping capacity. My hot rod will be what ever POS the rental company has available.

Basically I want to make sure I'm not hanging out by myself. I know that every person on the salt is a ruler and everyone is welcome in every pit, I just want to make sure I have people to shoot the **** with.

It fades out as the week progresses. I couldn't make it until Tuesday of last year but there were still cars and bikes running all day long up until Thursday and then it got kind of quiet towards the afternoon. I met and talked with all kinds of cool folks in those three days though.

The Swindlers will be there Kirk. If all goes well, we'll be running our 27T in the Vintage 4 cl***.

Dont ever take any vehicle you care about on the Salt.

I dont care how much Saltaway you use, its not enough, or how much you clean, there will still be salt dropping off the car for a LONG time. If you HAVE get that picture of you car on the Salt, do it just off the end of the road and dont drive it around too much out there.

    it WILL ruin the car.

Yep, I drove a brand new Chevy truck out there for the 50th and it got ****ed up! Not to mention driving out of the designated area and getting stuck in the soft, wet salt.

The Legion Special will get ****ed up and that's fine by me.

I'm looking to hit the saltt in September. I hear it's a bit more lonely then.

  10. Wednesday is really the last OK day. After that, don't bother. If you can rework your route to get there Tuesday, you'll be a much happier camper.

They shut down the third special course last year on Wednesday afternoon and there was no waiting on the other two. Still quite a few cars but not nearly the number of runs. People in the pits had a lot more time to sit and visit.

Yeah, we raced and our last day on the salt was thurs. If you are going for the carnival then the first fri sat sun is important. To look at race cars and visit in the pits, the whole week was good. After the weekend, there is still plenty to look at and see.

Open wheeled cars seam to fare better, not as many nooks and crannies for salt to get into. The worst year for me was when we had to drive through the lake at the end of the road. I had to change kingpins when I got home. Small br*** pieces from the bushing stuck to the pin and wedged making it hard to steer. I have talked to some other who had the same problem that year. FWEIW we leave on Wednesday.

That was 2007. I lost the front wheel bearings on the RV because of that lake. Looking forward to SpeedWeek this year!!!

To me, anytime during that week is fine. True towards the end after Wed. it leans out some, but it's still a great time.

    I'll be there.....

Me and a few friends will be there until Thursday with the Rolling Bones high and low speed division, staying at the Nugget. Seems to stay somewhat busy until the mid/later part of the week.

I've only been twice and stayed until Thursday nite, by then it was thinning out and I was beat up pretty bad from all the fun, flew in thursday nite, crashed for about 6 hours, got up, loaded up the 55' Moor-door and headed out to Mo Kan for another fun weekend. By Sunday nite I was completely trashed and crashed, I hate old people, they just can't keep up anymore. Ha Ha

  20. I'll be there again! Look for the old black chopper with the Old Crow Speed Shop logo on the tank, I'll be rite near it> Stop by the shops pit and say hello! Were there until the end! Crow.

My first time will be this year. From what I heard from friends, I have my room booked from Friday-Tuesday for the reasons that have been stated here.
But, it also has been said that any day of "racing" on the salt is a good day.
Maybe not as good as the first few days, but good days, nonetheless...:)
    Screw it...just go. Life's short............

Wow, Im shocked you have never been. I seriously figured you had done all the cool have to do car stuff. You will have a blast.

edit: And not that it matters, I drove my astro van out there three times and one of em was thruogh the crazy deep water near the entrance (07?) Anyway when we sold the van al little while ago we had it up on a hoist. No sign of salt at all. Maybe because of all the rain we have up here in the NW. Plus I really clean the heck out of underneath when we get home.

  26. come on, look for the '23t in avatar plus a red '27 that looks similar. We'll be there all week, racing till they kick us off, usually last day, last hour....My name is Hans i'll be the one smiling...I hope...;)

I think people start leaving early/midweek because they are wore out or broke, not because it gets boring. There's still some cool **** happening.
Four days is all I could muster last year.
See you on the salt I hope, Gary

No Camping ON the Salt, but on the entrance, the now infamous "Bend In The Road" is the place to camp & more....
