Was wondering if I used bamboo in a custom grill, if It'd get too hot and set my ride on fire???

*stupid question? maybe. Ahh well it's too late now*

...Any thoughts, advice to treat the 'boo (if needed), or let me know if i'm just plain screwed for even contemplating it..... cheers tikEK

  2. Cool Idea!

The air getting ****ed in through the radiator makes the grille cold.

Tha worst thing that could happen would be Woodpeckers or Termites.

My brother has it as a grill insert on his T coupe. Still in the build stage so I don't know the answer to your question. [IMG]

If you use Bamboo for your exhaust,it will catch on fire. [IMG]

For the grill, not a problem. There is no way it will get hotter than the water temperature.
You probably need over 400 degrees F to char Bamboo.

I'd be more worried about it not standing up to vibration. But since Bamboo is hollow,
you can epoxy some reinforcement inside.

Do you plan to use a bunch of Orvis bamboo fishing poles? They are octagonal, would look real sharp. Wire some bamboo to the radiator of your daily driver and see if you can light it. [IMG]

Ah hell, Finally a question I can answer with some confidence. I would not use standard bamboo for the grill. Bamboo tends to be very brittle and the air chambers inside WILL pop and make the boo crack. This happens when the air gets dry. I would use rattan with the skin on. I has the same effect as boo but is sollid and you can even bend it into a form if you steam it .Think the old rattan 1940's couches. There is a third option to use WANGI root bamboo. It has very pro*****d ribs and is also solid. It has the same bendable characteristics as rattan, but is usually found in shorter and thinner lengths. All of these will take a stain if you sand them down. Whatever one you decide to use, put some marine varnish on there to preserve the bamboo color. Untreated boo mold adn darken. Oh yeah, there is also BLACK bamboo that can run from a medium brown to a very dark, almost black color with som spots in it that make it look like tourtise shell.

  14. Boo? Bamboo is a perfectly good word that is in no way improved by slangy jargonization.

If you are worried about how well bamboo would hold up....a simple solution would be to cast a few pieces out of fibergl***.

I would imagine that you could make a few plaster molds cheaply and easily and then lay up some fibergl*** in them. With the bamboo stalks made out of 'gl***, you could paint them with automotive paints and not have to worry about sealing the wood. Its a neat idea.

.....hell, I just might try that myself.... [IMG]

When I build my hot rod out of military surplus vehicles, decomissioned ordinance, and twin mounted 1919 air-cooled Browning .30 cal's, maybe I should add some bamboo pungee sticks and Napalm flame-thrower exhaust....???

all of the hand rails in the mandalay bay shark reef look like bamboo....they are steel with weld around them to simulate the seams and painted.sounds dumb, but they looked real good...just a thought.

How about splitting the bamboo in half and epoxying the pieces onto a steel rod (frame) for support. After all the metal pieces are covered, the entire thing can be clearcoated using a epox or other 2k finish. I am sure this will hold up and even intricate design are possible because you are not relying on bamboo for structural support.
