OK...after tearing the little 170 I-6 in the Ranchero down and seeing it needs a rebuild...and the fact that we don't want to hack up that pristine car for a V8...the 5.0 is going into my '54. I've been thinking about the cost vs. simplicity differences between keeping the stock EFI system or just throwing a carb & intake. The easiest method would be a custom plug-in EFI Harness but they are $550, so I'm looking for a nice intake & carb setup, mainly because I have to have the AOD rebuilt, and that will be taking up the majority of my budget. Oh well, goodbye dreams of 20+mpg (For now anyways) So it looks like I'll be spending about 2 evening hours daily (after a 12 hr shift at the refinery) pulling the 223 I-6, 3spd, and getting the 302 to fit right... So has anyone done a 302 5.0 swap into their '54 Ford? How about AOD transmission? What motor mounts / trans mounts were used? Stock or ??? radiator? Clearance issues with anything? Will stock rearend hold up to a stock, un-modified Lincoln 5.0(non-HO)and AOD trans? As always, ANY feedback is appreciated.
Start here: go to Google and do a seacrh for 5.0 retrofits, 5.0 mustang swaps, search for "ford 5.0 EFI swaps", etc. you'll find a lot of info. Here's one I came across. The info is pretty universal... http://www.ford-trucks.com/article/idx/0/107/article/Installing_A_198793_Mustang_SEFI_5_Liter_V8AOD_Dri ve_Train_into_A_61_79_F100__F250_Truck.html HIGHLIGHT and click on the WHOLE link... Biggest thing: 5.0 H.O. Mustangs are NOT the same as 5.0 Fords, Mercury's and Lincolns. They are NOT the same engine.
I would go carb. I think they look better and are simple. and with an AOD I think you could get 20 mpg easy. I havn't messed with the putting a 302 in a 54 and up frame. That is the one with the tube style crossmember right? I think some could be fabed up pretty easy. I think the stock rear will hold up just fine. I think it has 3.73 in it stock too. keven
The Difference in HO and non-HO is Camshaft (HO shares 351W firing order) and injectors are larger in the HO's. I'd like the EFI just for reliability concerns, and mileage. If the entire harness can be removed and installed in my '54, without being a major pain in the ass, I'll go that route. Otherwise, carb & intake will be bolted up and motor will be ready to go. That's another story...my main concern is the actual installation of the 302 engine & AOD trans into the '54 chassis. Are there factory V8 mounts from another source that work? Trans Mount/Tunnel/Shifter? Header Clearances? Oil Pan clearances? shit like that. I'm anxious to get this swap done ASAP, because I don't like the idea of my good running car to be sitting around heartless for too long. I'm yanking the 5.0/AOD, and all EFI parts from the donor Lincoln this week...this will give me an idea as to how hard the EFI retrofit will be.
The EFI shouldn't be too hard to hook up, get a diagram and trace down and label the wires as you remove them from the donor. The fact that it's on the car makes it much easier than getting a bundle of wires out of a pile in the junkyard Take a look at the Lincoln's tranny mount. Some of them have a tubular crossmember with a mild drop built into them that can easily be modified to fit most anything. Just hack it to length, weld some plate or angle iron to the ends, and bolt it to your frame. Good luck! Take pictures if you can.
shouldn't be too many clearance issues since 54's use a similar oil pan than the flatheads did. The only two issues I can think of would be maybe the steering box (factory mustang headers clear the box though I believe), and you might have to modify the tranny cover inside the car. I don't think you have to get into cutting up the floor though. It's alot simpler in a 54 than a 49-53 i think....
<font color="red"> I have a 302 and AOD out of a Lincoln in my '55 and it was a pretty straight forward swap. The swap was done in America before the car was importred to NZ but all they did was enlongate the holes in the original mounts and it dropped in. They had butchered the rear gear box X member so I had a had new tube X member made. It is fitted with a single twin barrel carb and gets good gas mileage on trip. Not a race car, juat a cruiser. Runs real nice. </font>
E-MAIL MY BRO @ SHELBY1962@ADELPHIA.NET... HE'S VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE ON 5.0'S AND FORD IN GENERAL.HE PROBABLY HAS SOME STUFF YOU CAN USE TOO.I KNOW HE HAS THE 5.0 SHORTY HEADERS AND EXHAUST. HE IS IN ALABAMA TILL THE WEEKEND, HIS NAME IS JIM
I put a 650 carb on my 5.0 with AOD and found that at cruise I was so light on the throttle that I was still running on the richer idle circuits. I switched it out for a 390 and my mileage went up (22 mpg) and the engine comes off the idle circuit just as it should. Throttle is much sharper now. I'm really happy with the carb setup.
Try these guys www.windsor-fox.com During my tenure at the Ford dealer I got involved in a couple 5.0 EFI installs and these guys helped out. They know Fords specifically, Fords are not just a sideline for them that they begrudgingly deal with like so many other aftermarket sources.
You and I are in the same boat,,uh,car ,,, I am using a 5.0 w/t a 5-speed in my 54 wagon,,,,gonna pull the engine out of the mustang this weekend,,,,, I'll take pictures when I set it in the frame. HRP
[ QUOTE ] If the entire harness can be removed and installed in my '54, without being a major pain in the ass, I'll go that route. [/ QUOTE ] It really is fairly simple with a wiring diagram. The harnesses are in sections - the engine management harness is nearly stand-alone. Extra wires coming in are mainly for gauges & other stuff you don't need - actual wires INTO the harnesses you'll need are about 4 (I don't have a diagram here or I'd tell you which ones, but two of them are Power & Ground!). Check on Mustang websites - lots of early 'stangs being retro-fitted - you don't NEED the $550 Ford SVO/FRPP/Motorsports "street rod" harness if you've got an original... There's also a company that makes fuel rail adapters to bolt on AN fittings - if you don't go that route, grab the entire fuel system from the car too...
http://www.broncofix.com/Tech/efi/Ford%20Multiport%20EFI%20Wiring%20Manual.htm Try here for the actual diagrams. If nothing else, at least you'll be able to figure out what the different plugs and sensors are. FYI, I got a wiring diagram for the '88 Lincoln Town Car I'm using as the doner off Egay, it's the actual schematics that the dealers used. I think I paid about $10 bucks for it. You might be able to dig up an old Butch's Rod Shop set of mounts from someplace. I think he had kits to put 302's in these cars. Maybe I'm wrong... Here's another link I dug up: http://pages.prodigy.net/rjlougee/EFI.html
I think for now I'm going to take the "KISS"(Keep It Simple Stupid) path for now. Mainly because of an e-mail from the main mama-jama at Windsor-Fox. He said the Lincoln motor is good, but requires alot of work to retain the EFI system in another vehicle, due to it's complex (and vehicle specific) wiring system. I think a small 4bbl carb & intake, maybe stock, maybe not. Stock rebuild on AOD trans and using my stock '54 rear end. That about sums it up. Maybe in the future I can gather up some Mustang EFI goods and convert to a fuelie. Who knows. I'm going to pluck the 5.0 from the Lincoln & strip the EFI shit off it this weekend. Maybe pop the ol' 223 out of the '54 if I have time. I guess I'll try stabbing it and checking clearances for now. Main concerns as of now: -Speedometer cable...wtf do I do? -AOD Kickdown with carb? -Serpentine Pulley System...where to find v-belt pulleys for alt/water pump/fan? -Fuel Pump...can I hang one off the side of the motor or is it blocked off? -I've always hated the stock valve covers on 5.0's...does anyone make a "Lincoln" script valve cover for a SBF by chance? Or any other kinda cool SBF valve covers?
Shit, I just remembered something else. These EEC-IV Fords have some funky module on the distributor... how do we lose that?

[/ QUOTE ] 1) Lokar makes a cable that connects the late trans to the early speedo. 2) Scour the boneyards for an early Crown Vic, Lincoln or truck (`79- `84) for an AOD and carb equiped vehicle. 3 & 4) You did'nt say what year your engine is. I suggest you convert to an earlier front cover (`70's) and engine accessory drive if you want V-belts and a mech fuel pump. The best way is to pirate ALL the stuff at once on that trip to the boneyard. This can be pieced together but can become expensive if you have to buy everything individually.(dont forget the fuel pump eccentric when you pull the parts) 5) My faves are Cal Custom, Edelbrock "Classics", Moon ribbed, or the old fashined cast aluminum jobs from Speedway. Of course the early stamped steel Hi- Po covers are available used or from any number of Mustang resto suppliers. If you have any trouble finding this stuff PM me, I think I will able to help you even though I'm no longer a Ford parts guy.

I have the diagram somewhere, I'll check the shop tomorrow. I do remember it's very easily done though. Or you can always convert to early points or the "Duraspark" electronic ignition. If you choose the latter I've got the harness you need.
[ QUOTE ] Or you can always convert to early points or the "Duraspark" electronic ignition. [/ QUOTE ] If the Lincoln engine has the hydraulic roller cam, you'll need to keep the distributor gear off your TFI distributor & swap it onto whatever distributor you end up using...
I put a C4 with a 351W in my 1954 Ford. Not an AOD or Fuel injected, but sometimes pics are worth more than words. Pics are in my tagline.
Painless Performance Products has a harness for the 86-93 Ford 5.0 H.O. engine's . Its a stand alone harness and is for Mass Air Flow only. It will use a stock computer. Part #60510
while we're on the topic, does anyone know what has to done to the tranny cover/hump when you put a c4 or aod into a 53 ford? I think i remember someone saying something about being able to use either the master cylinder, or booster AND master cylinder out of a geo in these cars to upgrade the brakes. Anyone know about that?
http://www.stuart.iit.edu/students/2112/restoration/powerbrakes.htm Shows how to do it in a Falcon, though I cannot see why you could not do it for your 53 Ford. I am curious to see pics on how people put headers on their Windsor block in the 52-54 Models. My stock manifolds almost touch my steering box. I am curious if anyone has used a different one to allow header clearence. I will have to get an image up showing how close my application is.
I have a 302 Mustang oil pan you can have for free plus shipping if you need it. Far as advice, I can tell you to stick with all the original pulleys and harominic balancer if it is feasible! Youll find many different combinatations that Ford used that will NOT interchange if you cannot use it all together. I made my own braclets for both power steering and alternator on my 35.
12/2011 getting ready to put in a 99 5.0 out of mercury mountianner has the GT 40 hrads and intake too. Using a 1992 8.8 Ranger rear end with 3.08 gears, a 87 AOD with a wide gear set, Shortie headers with "H" pipe. Using a JAZ Alum 20 gallon tank with in tank EFI pump assy., Will have a complete pcm retune after complete. Need suggestions on install, plan on using 66 'stang mounts, keeping all the mercury accessories. PM Me vegasmax@wtxs.net What oil pan, will mine work? Radiator clearence? And other issues? Ron
