...yup. third time the ole neighbor called the cops cause, they say, i was making too much noise in the garage. and the third time the cop told me i was'nt doing a damn thing wrong. third DIFFERENT cop too. i find this whole thing ammusing as hell at this point. it's just gotten so rediculas you can't help but laugh. i'm definately gonna have a lawyer send them a letter informing them that a civil suit will be filed if they continue to HARASS me and my wife.
i did have the radio pretty loud when the cop showed up but i just had the attic insulated and figured there was no way they could hear the radio in their house now. it seems i was right too. i asked the cop if he heard the radio when he was in their house and he told me he stopped and listened for it and could NOT here it in there house and could only here it from their porch if he was trying to listen for it. it was louder than i normaly have it when he showed up. i'd cranked it for a good song and had'nt turned it back down for 4 or 5 songs cause i was hard at work on Donzie's 49 Fleetline. i let the cop in, took my ear plugs out and then turned the radio down. the first thing out of the cop's mouth was "WOW! what year is this car, it's GREAT!" we BSed about the car for about 5 minutes and i showed him all the stuff i was doing to it. he was very interested and said he liked the car, and the stuff i was doing, quite a bit. that was before he even said why he was there. not that i did'nt already know.

long story short. he reinforced the fact that i did nothing wrong but asked if i would do him a "personal favor" and turn the radio down "just a notch" from where it was when he came to the door (which i told him was louder than i normaly have it) so that he does'nt have to get called out again. i told him i would but that it would'nt make any difference, they will still call and complain.
i was gonna REALY crank it up after he left but MikeO called 2 minutes later. then i realized how late it was getting (8pm) and that i had'nt eaten all day, so i decided to call it a night and get some grub.

great stuff huh? [IMG] now i can't wait to get to work on Donzie's car tommarow. i wonder if these assholes realize how much i appreciate them motivating me to work in the shop [IMG]...

I think it's time for another party. One to let the neibors know just how much you appreciate them.

Hell set up a coffee maker and pick up some Krispy Kreme in the morning. Hook then up... Then start calling about harrassment by the neighbors.

sorry to hear of the on-going crap.

A buddy had the same problem and the neighbor called the city zoning to complain often.

My buddy finally asked the zoning guy one day if there was something he could complain about on the neighbors property. there was and my buddy complained. He got some other neighbors to join in on his complaints about the asshole neighbor.

The asshole soon left every body alone and he had to find storage for his travel trailer that sit on his front yard till my buddy complained

Try a different approach. Go see your neighbor, with hat in hand, and apologize for the noise but ask her for a solution that works for both of you. A little sugar goes a long way when trying to attract bears.

I'm not taking your neighbors side but....if you are wearing earplugs and you have the radio cranked so you can hear it over the grinder or other equipment....maybe it is too loud???
I spent 15 years living across the street from people who only had one volume on the radio,LOUD.Day and night winter and summer.I never called the cops on them but as soon as I could afford a new house,I moved.Other neighbors bitched but all it got them was broken windows and harassing phone calls. i tried the nice approach for a long time after they got "nasty". did'nt work a bit. first thing they complained about was the dogs walking across their driveway. i spent $1400 and a couple weeekends on a fence to keep the dogs in the back acre of the yard. (another neighbor's dogs still wander but they never say a word to them).
next thing they say i'm making too much noise inthe shop at night. i apologized and told them i did'nt know they could here me in there house. i stopped working in the shop after 9pm. then they call and complain one day cause i'm out in the shop hammering and grinding. it was almost NOON on a tuesday (they would have normaly been at work). the worst thing is the lady called my wife AT WORK and got her all upset so she had to come home to tell me that the lady was complaining.
they have complained about me having a couple project cars in the driveway even though the neighbor whos yard they can actually see from their house has WAAAAY more junk layin around, yet they say NOTHING to them.

i could go on but i won't cause i have before. needless to say i have gone WAY out of my way to accomidate them but the simple fact is you just can NOT please some people no matter what you do. i mean, come on. last night they had to have been outside to even be able to hear me at all and to know i was in the garage. they called the cops for one reason and one reason only and that is to be a pain in my ass. 3 different cops have snuck up on me in my garage 3 seperate times and have told me all threee times that i was not doing anything wrong by any stretch of the imagination.

It don't got to be loud to be annoying, especially if the neighbour is trying to listen to some tv or radio and they can hear your sounds rumbling away in the background.
I work on a ship and it's amazing the noise that you can hear in your pokey little cabin if you are trying to have a little quiet time and relax.

Anyway, tell the asshole to go buy a car, get in the garage, and get a LIFE of his own! That way he won't NEED to sit back, relax, waste away his life doing NOTHING! [IMG] And he might even turn out to be a good car buddy after a while.

i've givin up on them ever turning out to be decent human beings.
they have two kids (junior high and grade school) so i imagine at 7:30pm they were watching TV and plotting how they could be a pain in my ass. it was prolly more like 7pm when they actually called the cops.

i think it's time i built a dragster and gave them something legitimate to complain about. [IMG]

I feel your pain... My next door neighbor is the EXACT same way. She called the cops on me twice in one night, because I was outside wrenching... That's literally all I was doing. I had a drop light and a ratchet - no radio or anything, and she called the cops. Didn't even have the balls to come out and ASK me to stop what I was doing. I never tried to make amends with her... our entire neighborhood hates this lady. My payback came later-- she's one of those people that only cuts her lawn like 4 times a year... so when it was over 12" tall, I called the city on her numerous times! It's amazing what the city will do when you tell them you've seen rats in your neighbor's yard... That shut her up pretty good.

The only thing I'd do in your situation is approach them and say look - I'll be making noise in my garage from the hours of 9am to 9pm (or some reasonable hours). I'm sorry you may dislike that, but I'm legally able to do so. I've tried to be accomodating about it, but if you continue to harrass me, then I'll be getting my lawyer involved.

Is it possible that your neighbor is actually complaining about something else entirely, using the noise as a semi legitimate reason. I notice that on your website there are pictures of skulls. Do you have lots of tats, earrings, black clothes, weird hair; any of that? She may think you're a satanist, or a druggie, or worse. Fear motivates the "Monkey Man" more than anything else. Then again, much like a car, she may only need a good servicing. Forgo your hobby and service her. Make Dirk Diggler proud.

PS The website doesn't work very well. Not user friendly.

What website are you referring to? He doesn't have a website (killerkustoms.com never was done). Yes he has 2 tattoos on his forearms, neither of which they've seen. He dresses like a completely NORMAL human being. Jeans and tshirts. He looks like a "regular" person.

If you feel she needs serviced, by all means take it upon yourself to do so. Easy for you to say, you haven't seen her.

As for the theory of "complaining about something else entirely"....well, I'm not sure if that holds water. They've complained about the dogs, the cars, now the noise. Once one problem gets "solved" to their liking, they shut up. So, what would you suggest we do next? Roll over and let them walk on us?

Kustombuilder and CherryBlossom are both "normal" looking and very nice people. If I remember correctly, there wasn't much junk in their yard, and most of it was obscured by trees/bushes from the neighbor's house, furthermore, their neighbor actually lives pretty far away from the garage. I think the most telling part of this story is that 3 cops, not previously known by Mike, have all said that he wasn't too loud at that time of day, and that they couldn't hear anything from inside the neighbors' house. It sounds like the neighbors just need something to complain about.

OTOH, is there someone else making noise that they think is you? I doubt it.

let me know when that party is! Hot ROd Rumble was fun!

For what it's worth: I have a weird hearing disorder that makes me hear background noise louder than whatever's in front of me. I have to concentrate with all of my energy to have a conversation, etc, and neighbors music drives me extra nutty, since I'm also a musician, and my brain wants to figure out the music. To call this distracting is an understatement(!), but I get by okay. BTW, I don't find banging and revving (car noise) distracting at all.
Anyway, it sounds like you guys have been very considerate and reasonable, but there are some of us weirdos out here with sensitive ears...Personally, your neighbors sound like assholes. If you can't reason with them, maybe you do need to call a lawyer...

Who me? Why me? It was a joke and I don't want to see her. I think I'll go with the "Hearing aid theory. Some of the geezers with cheap hearing aids at the seniors dance complain about the volume no matter what you do with the amps and PA. Yea, that's it. The hearing aid theory.

  26. I think Fast Elvis is on to something, Once Fat Hack has here addicted to his "love methods", he can use his new influence over her to stop her from calling. [IMG]

Mike, once every cop who ever works your neighborhood second shift comes by, you can throw a big loud party and invite all the cops and her. She'll figure it out.

  28. Right on 4t64rd..........don't call the cops........call the hackster.........one session with Fat Hack and the neightbours wife will want you to keep the compressor or grinder on high to drown out her cries of passion!! [IMG]

  29. damn! I'm a lucky guy. I broke in my engine - 20 min @ 2000+ rpm x open shortie headers. nobody said a word. When I moved in, I was working on my car & the neighborhood teenagers came over & introduced themselves.

I agree with the post about the zoning guy. If you can't solve it by being a nice guy, be a bastard. (a law-abiding bastard)

If some Fat Hack lovin' wont help out, maybe he could come over and help you tune-in your radio to some Disco, we all know how disco has a soothing quality. Ya never know, you may actually like the stuff, buy you some bitchin' Denny Terrio threads, and all will be well. The neighbor will have nothing to complain about, if all you are doing is dancing in the garage. [IMG]
