Projects No more Ghetto exhaust

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Tugmaster, May 30, 2010.

  1. I got the motor (250 straight6) for my car from a buddy who pulled it from a 68 Biscayne. I also took the exhaust. After I installed the motor I decided just to cobble something together from the old exhaust. It was cheesy to say the least but it was functional.
This winter, my friend Joe Alexander (sixinarowjoe) made me a sweet dual exhaust from a stock manifold. I went to the local exhaust shop to find out what it would cost for them to run an exhaust system. They said: "Between $400 and $700 depending on how much of a pain in the *** it is to do" I kindly asked if that price included a reach around and the owner kindly pointed me to the door.
So, I go to Speedway and get a "box of bends" for $79, My local parts store got me 10' of 1-3/4"tubing for $19, and a pair of 18" gl*** packs from Summit for $12 ea.
Thursday night I put the car up on jackstands and had at it. It was not as hard as I thought. I made about 1000 trips back and forth under the car but it came out decent. The front pipe was a bit trickey since it comes down and goes under the front of the oilpan and goes over to the p***anger side of the car. For now I have the pipes dumping just in front of the axle. This winter I will fab up some up and overs and route the pipes under the rear bumper. Here are a few pics. Todd

Gonna look nice, that price from the exhaust shop is ******** stupid high!

  3. Sweeet..... Looks good.

I think the muffler shops price the stuff so crazy cause they just dont wanna do it.

Would rather put the time into something else, with someone who they can point out other stuff wrong to make more $$$.
They know that someone with a car like yours/ours isnt gonna buy any blinker fluid to go with our exhaust.

That looks like nice work. Just for comparison. I had a local exhaust shop do a complete exhaust on my 56 Pontiac. Duals and if you are familiar with it, it's a bit of a pita also with the drivers side exhaust dumping out the front instead of the back.

All the way back was $240. Basically the same mufflers as yours.

Looks great, that's what you have to do to get stuff done. Unless you have deep pockets its hard to get a hot rod built. As the fellow posts state, I think a lot of places just want to do bolt on exhaust and they have lost the art of doing a good custom bent exhaust system. We had a guy here in Texas that was great at bending and lining up a exhaust system (by eye), to bad he is retired now.

Looks great, Todd! Now how much to get you to come down here and help me do mine, in the driveway, on jackstands? ;)

BTW, how do the gl***packs sound? Any YouTube videos of it....it's all the rage now.

  8. I just fired it up. It sounds good. Not quite as loud as I hoped, **** the gl***packs should burnout over time.
I would be more than happy to come down and help ya. I did mine in my garage on jackstansds. I could really go for some Jersey pizza (fond memories growing up) All the pizza places here are owned by Greeks WTF!!! Todd
