First time to the USA: 1st July to 14th July: LA & NYC

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Psychobilly Boi, May 30, 2010.

  1. Hi All,

I've booked my tickets and I'm coming to the USA for the first time with a mate, I cant tell you how excited I am to be checking out the birth place of hot rodding.

I'd love to meet up with some HAMBers in the LA and NYC area and if anyone can tell me of some places to go, people to see, events to attend it would be appreciated.

I'll be landing in LA on the 1st of July and will be heading to the Hootenany on the 3rd of July. Anyone going? I'd really dig on spending 4th of July with some locals so if anyone has an extra spot I'd love to hang out on this important day.

I kick around LA until the 7th of July when I head to NYC until the 12th. I have a wedding on the 10th which is the main reason I'm heading over but love to meet up with some HAMBers on the East Coast as well.

I'm planning on doing a bit of the tourist thing but I'd more interested in going to the cool local little bars and hearing some great bands play or checking out some killer restaurants for some authentic American cuisin (ribs are on top of my list). The kinda places you'd never find if you didnt know where to look.

Anyway, if anyone can help out I'd really dig it.

    Danny

If you want to see what most people imagine CA is like I would start with exploring Hollywood blvd and see the freaks walking the streets, the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Graumans Chinese Theatre where the movie star foot prints are (Its all free except for the parking). While your there buy a map of the stars homes at one of the tourist shops. Then go to the Peterson Automotive Museum in Los Angeles which is on the corner or Fairfax and Wilsure blvd just a few minutes away from Hollywood, its pretty cool and well worth going to. There are some really famous hot rods in there. If you want to visit the La Brea Tar Pits they are right across the street from the museum, you can walk right to them from the auto museum, if your into fossils its kind of interesting. When you leave the museum drive down Wilshire blvd to Rodeo Drive and up to Sunset Blvd, this is only a few miles from the museum. Get out your map of the stars and drive around Beverly Hills looking at incredible houses and mega dollar cars for awhile, just so you can say you have been there. Then get back on Sunset Blvd and drive it all the way until it runs into the Pacific Ocean. If you go right you will be in Malibu. not much to see there but you can say you have been to Malibu. If you go left you can go to the Santa Monica Pier or further south to Venice Beach which is the ultimate freak show, everybody should see Venice Beach once. If you hustle you can get this all done in one day and not spend hardly any money at all and I think you'll have a good time.

The next day you go to the NHRA Museum in Pomona, Lots of hot rod history in there. Since your in Pomona you could stop by the So-Cal Speed Shop, maybe even talk them into a tour? Afterwards you drive down to Huntington beach and watch the girls and surfers. You can get sun burned really quick in Southern California during July. Bring a hat, sun gl***es and sunscreen.

If your really into hot rod history you could take the rental car up to El Mirage Dry lake bed to see where they raced in the forties and still do. It used to be free but they now charge $15.00 to get on the lake bed. Every hot rodder should drive on the lake bed once, it’s really a unique experience.

    Enoy your trip, Jerry

Where in ny are you goimg? This state is a litle bigger than most would think.I am on long island about 45 min to 1 hour from manhatten. As stated earlier bellmore is a real good hangout and thurs around the corner from me is oakdale another good spot.
Let me know where your staying or if you need a place to stay and and we will see what we can do.
Plenty of shenanigans to be had this way.

I land at LAX this coming Friday morning and this is exactly what I plan to do! After an 18hr flight I pick up the rental and I am driving straight to the Peterson, now I will follow the above and I think it will be a perfect way to spend my first day in LA. Thanks Jerry!

  13. Circle Line Tour: one of the best "tourist" things to do. It's a boat ride around Manhatten. The dock is next to the USS Intrepid Museum.
Pizza: eat a slice from as many different places as possible.
Hot Dog: from a Sabrett vendor with mustard, sour kraut and red onions.
Ride the subway: maybe a little too ********. I'm familiar with the #7 train and the E train. Both pretty safe (just don't make extended eye contact with anyone).

PM me for a contact #.

    No worries,
    Bil

  14. Guys,

    Hi Danny,

    Jerry has the best advice.

I`m not so sure about the "star map" but everything else is spot on.

I`ve been to LA a few times so a have been all of the above.

Before somebody starts on "food advive" i would say try In `n Out Burger if you see
one (they are now all over LA) or if you see little Mexican resturants (my favorite)
    try them. Cheap and good!
You are in the wrong place if there are more white people
than mexicans(did i wrote this political correct ?)

Just don`t waste time to drive to Pinks or Tommys or any special food place...

stormking is wrong. He's never been to Virgil's, just a couple of blocks off Times Square (152 W. 44th St). Expect to wait a while for a table, but it's real BBQ, and worth it.

Have you ever seen Aussie's drink? You are in for an education, if my friends wife is any indication! She introduced me to "Bunbdaberg Rum" (I think that's what it was called). Things got kinda hazy after that.
