Cool F-1 truck. Even back then, wide whites, Red rims, and baby caps were fashionable...maybe it just NEVER goes out of style!

Nice color on this Chev. Simple grill treatment still looks good today...as does the rest of this mild custom.

WOW, this Buick absolutely knocked my socks ff when I saw it. It, too was around for a few years, and then disappeared. Great use of the Hirohata's colors on it.

This shoebox would look totally in place at VLV or Paso, 20 years later.
    Timeless.

I drove the Olds about 1800 miles to get to Springfield MO for the Spectacular in 86(?).
I remember it was pretty hot out there. The 55 was in 2 tone color primer for a year, to see if I liked it 2 toned.

Here's a couple of FAMOUS guys!
Inside the car is Dave Crook. Automotive Designer, who studied under Harry Bradley. Built a killer candy green Ford that was featured in Rodders Journal, also helped design and work on "Afterglow", the tribute to Jimmy Summers 40 Merc that wowed us all last year!
Outside the car is Donn Lowe.
    Need I say more?
The car is a car that my buddy Manny (4 door chopped, sectioned Merc that Les Cove started) did a ch***is swap on, and then Donn did the bodywork and paint. It belonged to Tommy DeRosa, Colorado Springs.

    Last one for now.
Great 53 Chevy. Again, mild, cl***ic styling, gorgeous paint and color really set it apart form the rest!

Man, this thread is so awsome, it should be it's own section on the " main index"! [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

  13. Hey chopolds, your kustom is one of my all time favorites! I remember seeing it in some old KKOA videos I have! In one of them they are having a contest to see who can drive their car backwards around some cones and then park the fastest--I guess. You whipped right through it in your sled. It had to be hard, especially with a lowered lid. Also, aren't there a few pictures of your car in LeRoi Tex Smith's book on how to build kustom kars? E

  14. Thanx.....Its far from done....plan to fill the holes. Yeah, Its a late model column and the steering wheel is just somethin I already had. Well, the reason I went with the caddy tails....well actually 2 reasons...1: I already had em....2: My buddy has a '50 merc with little bitty tails....you cant hardly see him at night until your right on his bumper, and the last thing I want is some idiot rear-ending my sled. Then I'd be in jail for ***alt....knowhatimean?

  15. No, I dont have any pics of the chop. It was already chopped when I got it. The guy that did it did a great job. Other than the windshield, I've done everything myself. Alot of stuff you cant see from these pics. But I've only had it for about 9 months. The last pic with the different colors of primer is about 1 month after I got it. The first pic was in November.

Here's the only other shot I've got of Tommy's car. I had only seen it at the one show, although Tommy and Donn came out to one of the Sledscene's in Virginia Beach, they didn't bring their cars. Tommy was a great guy, a cop in Colorado, and had a cute son, who used to play with Manny's son, Anthony. Now Anthony is all grown and building really nice customs, had a Caddy powered 56 Ford, and now has a finished 54 Olds 98, and an unfinished 40 Olds coupe.
Thanks, lil OG, I remember that contest, fastest chop top back-up. I had it all over those Mercs and Fords, with that famous OLDS rocket power, and better visability with the 57 Olds back window. Won the contest 2 years running!

Yes, my car was in Tex Smith's Custom Car building book, in the choppping a top section. It was in black primer at the time.
Here's just a small reminder that not ALL customs built in the 80's were tasteful!

  25. I tried to buy that 55 Pontiac years ago when Ness was selling it (95 I think) and then just recently back in 2003 when Steve (current owner) had it for sale. Just wasnt worth 13K to me. So, I got to snap some pix of it. I am always looking for more pix of the 55 and his current 54. Anyways, more of the shoebox!

Thank, gl***guy! I hadn't realized you were old enough to remember that far back!
I didn't intend to do anything but topical pictures here, but I had my Olds building album readily available, so in the spirit of keeping this thread alive (until I go through some more albums) here's a "Brief History of My 55 Olds".

As it appeared at the FIRST Lead East....Flemington, NJ September 1983. This was taken in my driveway, where ALL the work was performed up until this point.

In the winter of 83, I went back to working for John Pazsik, my custom bodywork mentor. I had worked for him during college years, but after graduation, I got a full time job, and stopped working for him (he wasn't much of a "payer"). I couldn't keep my hands off cars, though and he asked me back to work for him, even if only part time. I chopped the car in his shop, with his help over the winter of 83-4. Put it in black primer. Here she is on the way to SLedscene East in Virginia Beach, taken on the Bay-Bridge Tunnel.
