Well, I finally got the engine in a running with help from Outlaw1929 and Brendograt67, now I just gotta ****on everything up. My question is with a 1984 Roller 5.0 that used to be HEI now converted to points- what is the plug and points gap? I was going to go with an earlier engine (67,68,69) for gap reference, but I'm just not sure as to what would be best for this application. Any of you SBF junkies have got to have some knowledge on this! School me please! Thanks, Nolan
Not sure about the points, but I will p*** along a lesson from experience-- Make sure to remember that the roller cam is hardened, and will quickly chew up a dist gear made for a conventional cam. Those HEI Ford conversion distributors usually don't come with a gear that is compatible w/ a hardened cam. Just sayin'.... Also, roller cams didn't come until '85, not '84.
HRH- correction...I called the guy that I got the engine from and he pulled it from his 85 ...not 84. Pardon the ignorance. And I should have informed further that I DID replace the gear on the dizzy. I at least got THAT right. As to the gap on the plugs?... any thoughts? So far I've got .035. Everyone agree?...
Just wondering why you went with a points distributer? Unless maybe it's for tradition??? -The Ford Duraspark ll ignition is a good system and everything plugs right in where the points system used to be. I usually grab an under hood wiring harness from a 75 to 79 Ford 1/2 ton (without air conditioning) because they are simple and everything you need is there, no wires or add or delete. You'll need the wiring harness, the blue duraspark module, the electronic distributer and the coil (as a group). Hiding the ignition module is the hardest part. Open up the plug gap to .045 and set your timing according to al***ude. I set them around 12 degrees but I am at 3000 feet. A lower al***ude allows for more initial advance. ...If you get really lucky you might stumble across the Ford MSD ignition module which is basically an MSD 6AL. The built in rev limiter is handy and the MSD limiter chips just plug right in. Ford used the system on very limited production Mustang 11's which is handy because the wiring harness and connectors are Ford so it plugs right into your existing (Ford) based wiring irregardless of points or electronics. Good luck with your project .
Ford points like 27 degrees dwell. Make sure it doesn't change too much (>4 degrees) when revved. Since you are using a points dist., use points type gap on the plugs. 0.035" Gotta wonder why you would go away from a pretty decent EI steup though. If you carry along a spare TFI module and tool, you have all the backup you need. Advance maybe?
30 degrees dwell/.018 gap, .030/.035 spark plug gap was pretty well in the ballpark on most V-8s that used points. Larry T
Thanks Deuces! Moefuzz- Thanks- To answer you as to why I went with the points is just the "look" and yes, tradition. I'm later going to go with a pertronix ignitor. kinda a double standard?.... And yes, I agree with the EI being a great setup. My 77 F100 runs the EI and runs ***s! Fires right up! oh...and I would like to know how your avatar's v-8 emblem is mounted. RodStRace- Gracias! Larry T- Muchas Gracias! Check, check, and...check. Thanks guys! Nolan
