I made my reservation awhile ago there, got an email from Expedia today saying they had to cancel my room. Called the nice Ramada lady, she said they were over booked, I told her I would take anything, I'd take a lawn chair by the pool. She ended up finding me another room, and Expedia sent me a $100 coupon. I'll be using that for Billetproof WA :) By the way, if ya need a room, call em up, they are getting cancellations all the time.

The weather looks like its going to be GREAT.. and not as hot as last year :D

    sunshine for weeks.

I'm a BBQ Jihad that started in Santa Maria (look up "Santa Maria Style BBQ" and "Shaws" in SM)... and I plan on eating nothing but BBQ'd meat until I come home from the great state of Texas. On the list are City Meat Market in Giddings (the best BBQ Chicken I've ever had), The Green Mesquite and Stub's.

    any other recommendations?

    ALan,

On your Barbecue Jihad, you had better talk to some more locals about where to get the real thing. Green Mesquite and Stubbs are tourist joints for white folks who are scared to go in the really good places. Same for County Line, Rudy's, and Salt Lick, imho. There's lots of good 'que around, but you'll have to get out of the line of white suburbanites from nice neighborhoods driving their mini-vans to find it.

Some of y'all jump in here to help ol' Alan out, and keep me from having to publically reveal all of my own hidden real, sure-enuff barbecue joints. But here's a hint. Come on in Highway 290 towards Austin a few miles to Elgin, and check out the grub there.

If i were comin into Texas to eat bbq, Green Mesquite and Stubbs would be at the very bottom of the list....if on it at all. REAL bbq in Austin proper is at Ruby's, Sam's, and House Park. The even real-er shit is down south of here in Lockhart at Kreuz and Smitty's.

In fact, the Meatheads are eating lunch at Ruby's this Friday at 1pm if you're in town. That's all we do is seek out the best bbq around.

Had the BBQ at stubbs and it werent bad. Perhaps a little "touristy" with the faux patina on the walls but the food wasnt bad.

Went to the Salt Lick lots when I lived in Austin, back in the day before it was a tourist place, it was good then, not so much now.

Had the brisket at Rubys near UT... wasnt really impressed. It was dry... had it couple of different times just to make sure... same result. Good beer selection, good character to the place, but dry brisket? I wont be in town at 1pm.. I'll be setting up out at Giddings, but will be in town later in the evening for the ASS get down.

Not afraid to go anywhere... Had me some of the best neck bone you'd ever want to eat in Gainesville at the Crab Shack II. I'm fairly confident I can handle myself just about anywhere... but I was looking over my shoulder at this place. The project housing across the street had look-outs guarding the parking lots on and on the roofs. Its a rough neighborhood.

I've heard tell of the place in Elgin... good for Chicken.

There is also a place near Giddings that sells only on Sat. morning that is supposed to be the shiznit... but I will be at the show :(

open to suggestions... I'll eat anything.

We cut the burnout contest a little short in order to fit in the cackle fest and the 2nd musical act... Junior Brown. That's a pretty good trade if you ask me. :D

car count was down though... Don't know why

Photo I took today. We left at 12 we counted 100 cars truck and 6 race cars. This summed it up for me. Very cool place to have a show!

then you missed the 200+ cars that were there..

    the burnout contest
    the cackle fest
    Mahalo combo
    Junior Brown

Nice creative photo cropping, take pic in the morning before everyone rolls in and show a car that chose to park on its own.

but car shows are an effort to get to, they cost $ and if the fun that is had at them isnt worth the effort or cost to you then its not worth it. Plenty of others stayed and had a great time, perhaps it just not your thing... and thats fine.

BTW the party is still going on in the Ramada parking lot... and its a little past noon. :D
