Hey all, Have searched this site and the 67-72 chevy truck site and can"t seem to find an answer. Maybe there isn't one! Question is, does anyone make a drop spindle for use with drum brakes? Seems everyone switches to discs. I like my drums, they stop excellent and see no need to convert to disc. I also plan on using spring to get a little extra. Trying to avoid replacing front end to later model as my truck is already put together and running/painted. Any help would be great
Adam, I went with disc brakes but used the dropped spindles from Classic Performance Parts. If you want to keep your drum brakes, I would just buy dropped coils for the front and rear. Here is a pic of my truck. It is 2" dropped spindles with stock coils in front and three inch droped coils in the rear.
That truck looks really good! Mine sits a little lower than yours, but it is not done correctly or safely in my opinion. The coils were heated and weight applied, i want to do it right. Thanks for the suggestion
Mcghauty's....if im spelling that correctly may be able to help you i know a guy who converted his 6 lug drums to dish and kept the 6 lug pattern who was bagged and BD so im pretty sure there was drop spindles on his truck running a 20 but he may have pie cut the upper control arms....sorry if im getting off into another subject all together. But with what I said you may not be able to keep the drums but you could keep the lug pattern and still go lower with disc which seems to work for the best anywho
I have a 65 myself and I'm pretty sure if you just use the drop springs you will be ok. I don't see the need for a spindle with drum brakes on one of these trucks. Since your truck is all together I think the springs would be your best and by far cheapest bet.
Seems no one does so far. Was looking to do springs and spindles to get maximum drop. Looks like I shell out the scratch for discs, or just do springs. Thanks for all help Anyone know what are differences in the two spindles disc/drum, just out of curiosity
Adam, You have two options when going to disc brakes: 1. The disc dropped spindles (you can choose 5 or 6 lug) that are used are about 72-85 Chevy truck spindles. You will have to change the upper and lower ball joints to 72-85, the outer tie rods to 72-85, and use an adapter from Classic performance to connect your inner (it will stay 65) and outer tie rods. You will need a new brake booster/ mc and a proportioning valve from an 85, that will be for disc/drum. 2. Find a 72-85 donar. Grab the entire front end, brake booster/mc, and proportioning valve, it will be 5 lug only. Two of the three bolts on each frame rail will line up, so you will have to drill the frame (one hole on each side). I understand that you will have alignment problems with Option #2, so I chose option #1. I am very happy with the set up. You can see pictures of what I did at http://www.txwheelers.com/modules.php?name=gallery2&g2_view=core.ShowItem&g2_itemId=1398 I hope this helps!
