K&N Extreme Air Filter Top

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Cool Whip, May 31, 2010.

  1. Does anyone have an opinion on the K&N Extreme Air Filter Top. I was planning on purchasing one but before I spent the $75.00 on it I thought I would see what you guy's out there have to say. YAY or Nay!

Its not traditional, I can tell you that. As far as is it worth it?? Depends on what you mean. Is the tiny horsepower gain worth $75 to you?

Id say if you have very limited air cleaner space and are choking the engine, this is a good way to help get more air to the carb. In that respect, yes its worth it.

If you have plenty of room and are just trying to find a way to try and make some HP... I'd p***. I dont have any dyno numbers in front of me, but I cant imagine that thing actually making any substancial HP.

  8. Well after such an overwhelming negative response. I have decided to rule out the filter top and save my money. Perhaps I might just spend it on becoming an Alliance Member and use the remainder to buy me a Happy Meal! Thanks for all the feedback guy's. It is alway's greatly appreciated.

  10. Well, I actually have one. Used it for a while on an O/T car but sold the car and kept the filter top. I tried using it on my other O/T car but would not fit on the Edelbrock 600 carb I have. Also the top came off the metal ring where it was just glue on. I just went for a cheap Edelbrock one I ordered off Jegs. Edelbrock is the ****!

I run one on my Willys race car. Runs the same with it as it does without it. Looks like **** but keeps the dirt out of the engine. Oh and I leave the hood closed too.

I guess it depends on whether your worried if your engine can use more air than your air filter can flow. I've got a couple, but it's sure not because they're pretty.

We ran with and without them on dirt late models. No difference on the dyno or track. We went back to paper or the RC1 style filters.

Just for fun, try running a thin film of vasoline or grease along the top edge of your carb throat and run that K&N piece of **** in a dusty condition, gravel road or blowing dust. Take the air cleaner off and look down at the grease you smeared around and it will be full of dust.

K&N works fine on dry pavement or mud, any dust and they ****.

    Fact,

    Yes..

I had a K&N on the Holley/ SBC in the Jag. Fine dust here in the desert gets everywhere.
I was having problems with the carb..when i took off the cleaner there was very fine dust in the carb. This was a new Edelbrock cleaner with a new Holley and new cleaner gasket.
After two carb cleanings i went back to a cheapie three inch with paper filter.
    No dust..no problems.

I have used K&N on my bikes for years..now re thinking that..
