model A front shocks..what angle???

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Topolino Kid, Jun 2, 2010.

  1. didn't like the shock brackets that came with my super bell axel ...looked at them and they extend the shock past mid travel when at rest...is this because the axel travels more down then up??? also i've heard that ya shouldn't lean coil over rear shocks past 30 degreese...does this hold true for the front short "rod " shocks that came with my pete n jakes/super bell setup??? what would be considered best angle degree for these???thanks

Shocks actually work best when vertical.
That said I would venture that 30* would be the maximum slant and slightly less or whatever fits or looks best would be fine.

Great Question! I have been waiting for other people to respond. So far you had only one response and it is dead on. I have a 29 Ford Roadster with a P&J set up. The geometry has been in play for a long time and works well if you pay close attention to alignment specs. The biggest improvement for me was Wheels and tire choice. Find a shop with the latest balancing equipment. My suspension is four bar with coil overs on the rear. The car now drives and tracks well at all speeds.

Spot on advice, I see so many cars with shocks at silly angles that can't be doing much at all.

You can effectively change the damping quality of a shock with angle. It will provide maximum damping when the distance of it's compression/extension is at a 1:1 ratio with the wheel's suspension travel. Angling it inward will reduce that ratio, and thus reduce the effective damping. All that said, sometimes it's about looks and/or what's required to clear other components.

If you want Mark ., i can put an angle finder on the ones on my front axle..upper mounts are real easy to make, and you can make them to get the angle you need, within reason of other steering components near by, or suspension travel.

  7. that would be great Randy...the mounts that came with the front end are welded to the other frame i started with..and i never really liked the way they looked...also as a stated earlier, i welded them on at the postioin that the directions said, and it puts the shock extended past the half way mark ...do model a front ends have limited droop travel and excessive compression travel??
