I want to convert my 53 merc to 12 volt but I want to use original gauges. How do I do it? How do I deal with the fuel tank sending unit?. I am rewiring the rest of the car.

You need to get voltage reducers, been years since I bought them, but JC Whitney used to carry them.

  3. runtz voltage drops on the power supply for each gauge....except on an ammeter if you have one. an ammeter measures current , not voltage. 6 or 12 volts will not make a difference. Speedway sells them for about $10 each

if you have a voltmeter...use a 60 ohm resister inline for the power to voltmeter

or you can build your own , check out this thread:

the sender will not make any difference , you can use the `53 merc sender with the `53 merc fuel gauge If you install the voltage drop on the power supply for the fuel gauge

I used a Ford dash voltage reducer on the + side of the guages.

I THINK Echlin VR-1 or VR-7 is one of the part numbers I used. (From NAPA)

One of these was was cheaper than the other, that is the one I bought.

I am about 90% on the part numbers.
