I want to convert my 53 merc to 12 volt but I want to use original gauges. How do I do it? How do I deal with the fuel tank sending unit?. I am rewiring the rest of the car.
runtz voltage drops on the power supply for each gauge....except on an ammeter if you have one. an ammeter measures current , not voltage. 6 or 12 volts will not make a difference. Speedway sells them for about $10 each if you have a voltmeter...use a 60 ohm resister inline for the power to voltmeter or you can build your own , check out this thread: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=448589 the sender will not make any difference , you can use the `53 merc sender with the `53 merc fuel gauge If you install the voltage drop on the power supply for the fuel gauge
I used a Ford dash voltage reducer on the + side of the guages. I THINK Echlin VR-1 or VR-7 is one of the part numbers I used. (From NAPA) One of these was was cheaper than the other, that is the one I bought. I am about 90% on the part numbers.
5th avenue garage has them... good price. Also, they have a pamphlet on everything you need to do to convert to 12V. http://www.fifthaveinternetgarage.com/
