Running 4.75 16's on my roadster (avatar) could never get them to quit bouncing over about 50 MPH, I even sent them down to the hot rod garage in sands springs Okla. and had them shaved, balanced with all the latest and greatest equipment, talked to Coker last week about replacing them, and as normal the great customer service we get from them, "not a problem" even though i have had them for almost 3 years .So just for fun yesterday i got 2 12 guage shotgun shells with #9 shot, took the valve's out of the valve stems, dumped 1oz of shot in each tire, took her out for a spin.At first no change the all of a sudden, NO FRIGGIN BOUNCE! drove her to Delano yesterday up the highway, 60-70MPH smooth as silk. She will bounce for about the first few miles then its done, unbelievable the differance it made!
I use to put Balancing sand in big truck tires. I would roll up into balls and balance them. A wile back a guy was selling a ring that fit between the wheel and drum. Had a ring filled with oil a ball bearings, said to do the same thing. I would wonder how many miles or at all if it would damage the inside of the tire?
I don't think it will, got tubes in them and once they find their "sweet spot" they stay there. Its really a kool deal.
We sell a product at our truck tire business called equal balancing compound and never had a problem with casing damage with use. It mainly gets used in steer tires then when they're worn out we retread them for drives or trailer use and never had reject because of the compound. I've even heard of guys puttin a couple of golf balls in there. It comes in paper bags that open when it rolls, each tire size has specific ounces for use.
All the tire balancing in the world won't help if the drums/rotors are out of balance. That's where the beads etc. come into play ,they are taking care of the imbalance in the drum/rotor. Use to be you could get the whole shooting match done on the car taking care of all the prob. That kind of equipment is about as hard to find as a Dodo bird. Only know of one place in Phoenix that still does it.
If they are bias plys the first few miles is probably working out the flat spots from being parked the tires get warm and become round again. Never tried BBs but I guess it would work. I have liquid balanced a bunch of them like they used to do with the big trucks should work on the same principle.
News flash here as well! WOW! Just to keep us from being arogant asses! Please! may I have another boss!?!
looks like someone needs another....he wouldn't want to be (more of an) arrogant ass... To the OP, I've used the powder before, but never thought of the bb's..
Y-Block, think this would be worth a try on some 145 tubeless radials? I've got the same problem on my roadster.
Do it you wouldnt believe it , getting ready to go drive the roadster to get something to eat and prove it to myself again..........
In the 4X4 world the guys use airsoft pellets in their tires. Never thought of adapting it to a hot rod! Good find!
I use steel bb's to balance 35"'s in my daily driver jeep. Here's a link that has charts that show how much weight you need for your tire size: http://www.innovativebalancing.com/tirechartmap.htm
ok girls and boys i had to go prove it to myself again................un-friggin believable ran it up to at least 75 mph ( no speedo) smooth as hell it has never driven like this in all the years i've owned her, find a skeet shooter, they use #9 shot, a normal 12 guage holds 1 1/8 oz of shot, open up the top of the shell, take the valve out of the valve stem and pore it in, gonna spill some so about an oz does it.
Back, years ago, W/JCW sold tire balance disc's that mounted between the rims and the drums that did just this w/ ball bearings in their OD tubes. Not new tech at all by me. pdq67
so how does this work, do the BB's keep moving around or do they imbed themselves into the light side of the tire?? Dont quite understand the concept of how this works. (wish I had heard of this when I had my sedan with bias, had them shaved on the car which worked but this is interesting and might be necessary for my next set.
I had my 15' front runners shaved, balanced and they were better.I think I'm gonna give this a try to get rid of the little jitter i get at 60+ mph. Smooth as silk sounds good! Oh yea they are coker stones 5.60 15
Learn something new every day, still thinking about how it works though??? Not making sense to me....
Used Dynabeads in my modified from day one, mostly because I didn't want half the rim of my wheels covered in lead weights. They worked perfect.
I run ceramic ones in everything I have on the pavement, and have for years. Every so often somebody notices that my DD, which runs bias 36's, has no weights whatsoever. Not sure about steel though. Might have a rust issue over time.
