In short, how do you do it? I've got some Kirker 2K primer surfacer. The instructions for use say that to use as a primer/filler, add catalyst and shoot with no reducer. It will hardly come out of the gun. This is a Harbor Freight HVLP gun with 1.4 tip. Airless sprayers are the only thing I've seen that can handle stuff this thick, but I'm a rank amateur. What is normally used? Bill
1.4 is too small for primer. you need at least a 2.0 to spray that. Menards, home depot, lowes all carry cheap hvlp guns. got one from menards for less than $40 with 1.4 and 2.0 tips and needles, sprays good with primer. if you start thinning it your going to loose your filling properties.
Definitely need a bigger tip.1.4 is for shooting paint.I use a 2.3 for high fill primer Don't thin primer unless you are wanting it to lay down for a finish coat otherwise as stated above-you loose the filling quality of the material.
If the mix ratio is 4-1 or 5-1 over reduce at 4-1-1 0r 5-1-1, because you have over reduced you will have to ad a couple of extra coats to get the same build. Most paint manufactures reccommend a 1.4 gun nozzle with their high build primers. If you go on Kirkers web site their will more than likely be a gun reccommendation for that primer. A 1.4 nozzle breaks up the primer in a finer mist than a larger nozzle set.
I just shot primer on a 33 Ford project that I am working on for a customer. I used my Sata with a 1.4 tip. The ratio on the primer is 4 to 1 and I added 1 part reducer. I always do that and have never had issues.
Ok, lots of this is nonsense. A 1.4 is too small for a high build. Overreducing will help, but kind of defeat the purpose of the high build unless you put on more coats. I would recommend a 1.8, anything bigger and your just wasting materials. Follow the instructions and not the guys who think they have it figured out.
^^^^ What he said. I just picked up a cheap gun with a 1.8 tip for primer.....works great. Saves time and materials.
If you have your panels straight and the scratches sanded down go ahead and add 1 to 1 1/2 part reducer and spray 2 or 3 coats. Before you use the HF gun again be sure to back the needle out of the gun, and get all the residual out before you spray again. As others have said though. You do need larger tip to spray high build primers.
....and here comes Bill, OFF THE TOP ROPE!!! Directly into a leg-drop. I love this kid. Just keep him away from the rodentia. -Bigchief.
