I run a 406 in my 71 camaro it was a two bolt block that had a main cap girdle on it. For some reason I took it back apart don't remember why but it was a good thing the main caps were walking. Even with the girdle, So I put a splayed 4 bolt and girdle. No more main walk. It is a pump gas motor 11.4 to 1, 3600 pound car with me. Runs low 11's @ 120.5 mph.

I run a 6" **** rod, eagle forged crank, wiseco forged flat top pistons, 242 246 comp roller cam and 195 afr heads. hot rod to hell is right you should only use 6" rods they are a little more work but there worth it. I run mine to 7000rpm:D

These 400's are great lil motors and quite the torque monsters.
Im building a 406 1970 4bolt block now 10.5.1 Mahle forged pistons and 6" **** rods and **** crank. Brodix IK 200cc 2.02 1.60's with a rollar hyd cam 242-246 cam PP Hurricane single plane and a 750 mighty demon.
Will probably throw studs in the bottom end and a windage tray for the 7 quart pan but built well and thought out these motors will make in the 500-550 hp range pretty easy and not have to spin them to the roof to do it mine should be all in by 6,500-6,700 in a fairly light car with a good stahl and and gear should be a reallll blast
Mines in a 48 Chevy fleetline with 9"and 4.30 gears and a 350 with 3,500 stahl and foot brake. but will be mostly a fun street car.
Car and motor are still in mock up yet with old parts for placement but getting close to going together.

Another good idea is going with an aftermarket crank good peice of mind and not that expensive and to have it internally balanced well worth the money that way you can run a regular flywheel and dampner aswell and not the heavy exteranl units. the money saved on them alone will off set your internal balancing!

a 406 cant be beat theyre screamers with little cost compared to other motors the 377 version, 400 block 350 stroke 5.7 rod is a great combo . 2 bolts are stronger but never seen a 4 bolt fail

just got my 400 sbc made and it is a real gem. had to put a bit more of cash because of my inexperience here. but this forum and a few others went a long way in helping me. would be going for a better upgrading later this year.

here's another fact to remember, look at the starter bolt holes and make sure they're not cracked !
