my ol ladys got a 64 galaxie 500 xl 4dr and the 390/cruise-o-matic has had it. my buddy has offered me a 428/c6.
question: can i put this in easily? or em i gonna have to make new mounts'n ****? will the cruise-o-matic bolt up to the 428?

i know the engine is relatively close. but don't know about the trans.

Can't say definitely on the C6 fitting the crossmember and driveshaft, but you will have no problem with the 428 slipping in.They came with FE motors from the factory and the only thing I can think of different is the 64 used 2 bolt motor mounts and the 428 should have 3 bolt.Thats the way I remember it, but my mind sometimes goes blank.I have a 428 in a 64 Galaxie and theres plenty of room.

Bid Five, Good to see ya on the HAMB ! It is my guess that the
428 should bolt in to the existing frame mounts. If the 428 has three bolts - could you make an adapter from the old mount to the 428. The C-6 is the trans to use and should require the trans xmember to be modified. Should not be too big a job. Seem some 60's Galaxies with the 427 SOHC ! Post your build when you get into it.

You might want to check a few things out on the 428 before you slap it in there. Some 428's are worth really good money (like $3,000-$5,000) and it won't be a huge difference between the current 390. Decode the engine, dates and heads and intake to see what it is before you decide. If the C6 has a cast iron tailshaft it's worth at least $800 too.

The difference between your 390 and the 428 is bore and stroke, they are the same engine.

My understanding (fwiw) is the 390 and 428 are the same block. The engine will likely fit fine. That said, iirc, the 428 is internally balanced and the 390 isn't. Or its the other way around. Meaning balancers aren't interchangeable.

I don't what similarities or not there are between the transmissions.

    Good Luck :)

390 is INTERNALLY BALANCED....428 IS EXTERNALLY BALANCED...just make sure you use the proper flywheel and balancer.

C-6 will need a few mods to trans mount and a bit of firewall/floor clearance... Ford-a-Matic and Cruise-a-matic will bolt right up to the 428...but you MUST use a flywheel specific for the
    28.

No need to cut the floors, just smack it with a big hammer a couple times.

The C-6 has reinforcing ribs on the case where the bellhousing area meets the main body. It'll require about 1/2 inch more clearance than the ****** you have now... No big deal.

Big Five, I think you will find the biggest issue may be that the trans crossmember may need to moved to line up with the trans mount, The floor may just be some mild hammer and dolly to get some room for the C-6. Should not be anything to big.

My son & I put a 390 & C6 into a 59 T-bird about 10 years ago & didn't have to cut or dent anything. They have less room than a Galaxie. So what you need to do is fab a new trans mount that is a bit lower than the original (also a bolt in). If I remember correctly the bolts for the trans mount were about 1" farther back. We then got about 1/4 inch clearance at the lower "corner" of the firewall trans tunnel. In a Galaxie I don't think it would be an issue since the T-bird is a unibody and much smaller in engine compartment.

As for Pir8Darryl only the later C6's had the ribs. I think before 1970 they were a smooth rounded cover over the torque convertor.

early c6 should be smooth, i think. may still need a little clearance work, but nothing a bfh cant tackle.

I believe Crites makes a trans mount for the C6. If you can fabricate your own it's not that hard.
