For guys running a 700r, have you installed a flywheel/converter cover? They are hard to find for a 700r. With modifications, I think a 350 cover will work. Is it best to leave it uncovered? Thanks.
No a th350 cover will not work, or i should say its not a direct bolt on..alot would have to be done to make it work and there are like 2 or 3 covers for the 700r4s and i have one that was chrome and supposed to fit, and it doesnt. good luck on that and when you find one that fits let me know where you got it from chevies of the 40's only had the one..the one that didnt fit that is...at least not my 700r4 bone yard, is where im going next would i run it uncovered..I have, but i dont want to. **** can get in there and **** up stuff..would you want a plastic bag or 20 feet of closeline to get wrapped up around your torque converter..or a nice big rock get up in there? or wose yet..clip your ring gear on a curb and bend the piss out of it
I ALWAYS use a cover. A older style metal Turbo 350 cover is on my 1990 700R4. I prefer a old, used original metal GM issue cover to the newer plastic or repro CHROME ones .
I dont run one on my car. Im running a turbo350 though. If you travel down dusty roads it might be a good idea to use it. Dirt and **** will chew up your front seal after awhile. Other than that i dont think it will matter. Im no pro though. Im sure one will be along in a minute to correct me.
Chevrolet offered a cast NICE aluminum one to fit the 700R4 ... for the pickups. I have one ready to install on my 32 3W ... the next time I have it on the lift. I did cut the nasty looking ears off on the bottom of the cover. Available on eBay ( HINT ... HINT ) for usually 25 dollars. .
Check out Bowtie transmissions at http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com/catalog/catalog.php?Action=GETSUBCAT&CATID=VA1 Inspection covers priced from $37.95
The "nasty looking ears" were for two braces on the diesel engines. These braces strengthen the bellhousing area considerably and if I were building a rod using a 700 I would definitely try to find a way to use them.
YES ... but I had it on the 3W ... and about drug them off ... so I changed to a sheet metal cover ... Decided to cut the nasty things OFF and reinstall the cast cover.
wonder what the cast one would look like sanded down nice and polished back up? Its aluminum right? and is it possible there are a few different sizes? like for different ring gear size? because the nice stamped one from chevies of the 40's just will not fit my 700r too shallow,
I bought a stamped steel from Chevy for 700r4. I have the part number on a file. If I remember I will post it here. Or PM me and remind me...
I got my 700 cover out of an Astro mini van-it's aluminum too-had a couple nubs on the bottom I ground off-not quite as big as the ones in that pic earlier
I bought one in 1998 from a local GM dealer. GM part number 15650700. I am running it on a 700r4 in my 40 Chevy...I searched GM parts and it is still listed as a trans cover.. Good luck
I was scratching my head reading this because I'm pretty sure every vehicle GM sold with a 700R4 has a cover on it... but my 700R4 experience is all trucks, so I didn't realize maybe they cheaped out and put plastic ones in cars. Just a guess but I wouldn't be surprised if I can pull all the metal ones I want off trucks for a cost to me of around $5-$10 a shot at the you-pull-it yard. It's not even on their price list, so until I carry one up to the counter and ask, and even then it depends a little on who's on the register, as to how much it is. If it's something people have trouble finding, I'll pick up a few and put them in my stash.
When you hit the junkyard look at some of the 80s Cameros, there are plenty of them in the boneyard and most ran the 700r4 trannies, some metal some plastic, got one off of a 86 and it was metal, paid $5.00 for it.
