Trying to remember the name of a movie

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Ratroddude, Jun 10, 2010.

  1. Remember seeing Dan Haggerty some time ago with a Top Fuel car at the US Nationals for maybe a couple of years. Think he was a team owner but don't recall who did the driving.

    Yea ,and I never could figure out how they got tires to squeel when they spun them in the sand in the old movies and t.v.shows. It`s a mystery!

  11. You won't find it any other way.

    I watched it again a few weeks ago, I don't remember the hood up on the truck.

    "He's drunk with the greed of his youth!" D. Hopper.

  12. Doug, you're right about the charm crappy movies (and TV shows). There's a scene in The Giant Gila Monster where the roadster loses its recently installed whitewalls, which magically return in the next scene.

    Getting back OT, here's a bit of trivia for you re the King of the Mountain:

    jcmarz is correct that the Hopper character was based on a real person, a guy who owned a customized '60 'Vette (I've not used his name for privacy reasons) - when I saw the film I knew instantly who the writers were modeling the character from. The owner of the 'Vette is someone I've known for around 40 years;

    A lot of the extras in the film were then current Mulholland racers. There's a quick segue to a guy jumping up and down cheering the racers on - he's a guy I've known since elementary school days and was introduced to racing on the Hill by me in 1971. That guy turned out to be a hell of a driver on Mulholland;

    The New West article interviewed what I think were the last generation of Mulholland racers - in the early '80s parking was prohibited from dusk to dawn, the road was changed in a number of places, as a new subdivision went in, and patrols were stepped up.

  13. I remember Charlie from back then although I still think the Hopper character was based on a certain 'Wrench-Arrow' driver. I'm sure you know who I mean (and I'm not the guy!)... :D

    For those that know ,,,wasn't the Porsch in the movie much like the one James Dean crashed ?? and wasn't James Dean a good friend of Dennis Hoppers ??? Didn't Dennis have a part in writing the script / screen play ??

    The Porsche in the movie was a 356. While Dean did have a 356, he was killed while driving a new Porsche 550 Sypder.:(

  16. Fiberglass copy on a VW chassis. Hopper was in Rebel Without a Cause and Giant with Dean. I don't know about any writing credit on this film.

  17. Of course all this just poses a bigger question.

    Assuming that they used a "stunt car" of some kind to to drive over the cliff in flames, where's Dennis Hopper's Corvette now? Sitting in a low budget movie car collection somewhere? Under a bunch of cardboard boxes in the back of someones garage?

    Being from an obscure movie like this, this car could have very easily slipped under the radar.
