The easiest and a neat method is to find a set of stock '41 Buick manifolds for the big or the little Buick engine that you have. The intake is a dual carburetor manifold while the exhaust has two outlets that can each be attached to a separate exhaust pipe. The manifolds are probably not too easy to find and probably somewhat expensive; but so are the other alternatives. Perhaps check out the Buick clubs for possible leads. On my '38 248 ci I had to live with a five and three arrangement. It had a strange sound, but I had twin pipes! The '41/'42 dual carb manifolds work better. Good luck, Frank
We are currently in the process of splitting a stock 263 manifold. A 4/4 split, first four, back four. I'm uncertain at this point how it will turn out, or how it will sound. I hope it does not sound like a V8, but time will tell.
I agree with Buford and the others about the '41/'42 set up. BTW, the 5+3 was a common arrangement back in the day.
That Buick will sound like nothing else you've ever heard ... at idle with a pair of 30" Porter steelpacks & 1 7/8" or 2" tailpipes under the bumper, you'll be standing back there admiring how you can hear each cylinder fire. The '41-'42 compound exhaust will require some engine mount work to clear front headpipe on the later '40s up cars.
There are issues getting the front manifold to clear the engine mount with that set up, if you can find an affordable one. The 5/3 set up was most likely common back in the day because it's not too difficult to do. The 4/4 arrangement has involved cutting the manifold in two to install the block off plate and we have welded it back together as to use the stock outlet for the front four and we have yet to add a dump for the rear four. I'm trying this because I have the spare manifold on hand. I hope it works, we'll see!
you can get the 41 and 42 two 2 manifold and split exhaust. You can find them for cheap on ebay every once in awhile. I got mine for under 300!
The trouble with 41 exhaust is the outlets from the front and back point towards each other. They feed a Y exhaust pipe.
Here is my system I'm working on for my 263. Its the 41-42 factory setup. But I'm going to try and use the Holley 94's instead of the stock Strombergs.
