What kind of column do you have? I don't think it will work with a '40 column, the bell is too big. A "banjo" column, vw, early gm, any type that didn't bell out more than about 1/2" (1" total diameter) larger than the column should work fine.

Yea the thickstun air cleaner was partly my inspiration.[/QUOTE]KKP
well than it might not fit, I have a "custom":D set up..56 F100 column with home made adapter to use a late 60's Mopar wheel, It will need a bell that steps from 1.75"ID to 4.5"OD in a depth of about 2.35"

I would be interested if you sold one that would fit around the 1.75" column just below the bell, wouldnt need the self cancel deal either..but i like the look of yours

the same as on a late model column except the little wheel on the universal box rides on the steering wheel so that the mechanism can sense directional movement.

here is a neat animation of how it works.

    Minor updated and question.

I've settled on the allstate type mechanism because of the simplicity of the design, and it would make it economical to produce.

is anyone opposed to this schematic for the switch?
I would include the relays, fuse and flasher in small box to be mounted under the dash, also allowing a smaller more streamlined unit.

Starting to come together now: Some sneak peak pics of the pattern for the top half of the case. Still needs some work but you can get a good idea of the shape of the finished product.

I've heard perlite doesn't work so well with a hot furnace.

Could anyone that's interested in getting one of these post some measurements of the "bell" so that I can make these as universal as possible. It will fit 1 1/2" and 1 3/4" columns. I would like to know the diameter of the bell at its widest point and the "height" (the distance from the column tube to the bottom of the steering wheel.)

    Thanks.

I'd be in for 2 as long as they were priced resonable.

I hope not! I would definitely want one...I catch myself driving around with a signal on in my coupe more often than I should, feeling dumb when I notice it!

Not dead yet. Mechanism has been worked out, casting is on the back burner at the moment. Definitely need to get back to casting.

I had an external unit similar to this on my old high school '76 ex-Postal Jeep. Only, the rubber wheel fit through a slot in the column housing and ran against the steering shaft itself. I went looking for something similar today, and had no idea finding one would be so hard to find. I'd have figured a universal, clamp on, self-cancelling turn signal switch box would be a pretty popular item.

I would appear to have figured wrong.

Is this project still in the works, or being 28 months zombified, is it dead?

Bought this thing at a garage sale for a buck. When I got it home and took a good look at it, it's a really cool piece. One hot wire in,one out to each side turn signal. It is a self cancelling unit. Evidently there was an opening in the top of a 1 1/2" column. The shaft had to have a small piece about the size of a 1/4" key. There are two little ratcheting dogs that hang down. In the neutral position the key clears both dogs. In the 2nd picture it is in the right turn position. As you are turning the shaft to the right, the key depresses the dog and lets everything slide by and work smooth. When the shaft is turned to the left the key catches the dog and shuts the unit off. The next picture shows the dog hanging on the left. That is for a left turn. I wired this up to a light and power source and it works fine. I guess all I have to do is determine how big a key to affix to the shaft and how big a window to cut in the column. I think this is slick, but then again it don't take much to amaze me.
