A guy I work with almost lost a thumb to a brown recluse spider bite.

He waited too long to go to the doctor, got infected. Those things worry me more than snakes...they're harder to see and they love places like garages.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but sort of a relevent story.. Some years ago I was at Bobby Twigg's (long before American Pickers) with a couple of friends. We got the parts we needed and were just looking around the yard ,I stepped around the corner, and some ***HAT had killed a huge brown snake, and coiled it up in the middle of the path. I let out a shreik, and ran my fat *** out of there as fast as I could. That ended our search for that day.Bobby and his cohorts got a good laugh out of this.I noticed when the pickers were there he warned them about rattlesnakes. If he had warned us,we would'nt have gone near the place!

Damn, I HATE snakes! I've had some close encounters with them over the years but the thing that freaked me out the most was when a rat jumped down from behind the dash of a 1948 Diamond T and tried to run up my pant leg.

This post makes me appreciate the cold Michigan winters more.

We have soda machines on the back porches of the buildings at work. In the meanest, dryest, hottest days of August, the damn moccasins are so desperate for cooling that they will crawl into the slots where the drinks come out. Ya hafta look to be sure, everytime you buy a soda. South of Houston.............slide

I never gave much thought to the danger of picking up old junkers until I bought an old motorcycle for parts. It was pretty dirty, but it was cheap enough and had a bunch of parts that looked well-worth the price. When I got it home and started prying it apart I found mud-wasp nests in just about every orifice - under side covers, inside the headlamp, etc. They were all dead, so that wasn't much of an issue - just a lot of chipping out of dried mud. Under the seat I found some shed snake skins from a former occupant that had moved out, which made me start to wonder about this bike. I delayed my tear down a bit, and a few days later the bike was covered in tiny spiders and webs, as was much of the surrounding area of the garage. I sprayed down the place pretty good and abandoned my garage for a few days. The spiders were gone, but I had wondered if locusts were going to show up next or if it would start raining frogs.

PicK yur Part in the city, pull a front rotor off and inside the hat is one the biggest Black Widows I've seen sitting next to her egg case and asking me you want some of this?

When I was a kid my uncles went berrying with the stovepipes around their calves.

  9. We deal with rattlesnakes around these parts all the time.

Normally don't like to kill them 'cause they keep the mouse & pack rat population down but, if we run into any nasty ones that won't scare off that are too close to the shop or house.... you can blind them with a good shot of carburetor cleaner long enough to hack 'em with a shovel or machete.
