I saw it mentioned in another post being installed on a model A and wondered if it is used as a cross steer or not? Also what year Jeep box were they using? I dont need any -just like to keep informed....... ANYONE KNOW THE SCOOP?
I remember R&C doing a "how to" on putting a jeep steering in a Model A. It was quite a while ago. I'll try and dig around over the next week or so to see if I can find it. It was side steer like the A.
anyone use a 65-67 Mustang box as a CROSS STEER? that IS how it was used in the Mustang-remember?? ALSO- what other boxes would do as a CROSS STEER set up on an early ford????
The Willys Jeeps used a side steer box. That would be the small jeeps with the flat fenders. It "pushed" a bellcrank mounted on the front crossmember that turned the wheels. I'm not sure when they went to a cross steer box, but whenever it was it is a Saginaw box mounted on the front of the frame. It is a pretty good sized piece. I don't know if the Willys pickups and wagons used the side steer box or not, I think Rocky has one of the pickups, maybe he could school us.
choprods.....I have a '67 Volkswagen bus gear that looks like it would be an excellent cross-steer box for an early Ford.
My old 52 Jeep pickup uses a fairly compact side-steer box that pushes/pulls the drag link. Naturally, mine needs rebuilt. I'm gonna try to keep mine in place...
I had a POS '86 CJ7 for 3 years... rebuilt the steering box 3 times, replaced it twice, drove most of the time with 8-12" of freeplay in the steering and completely lost steering once. The guy I sold it to immediately installed power steering. I'm not a big fan of Jeep steering boxes.
