I am not a big poster.but Im here all the time reading and looking a cool pics just about daily! I need to know if there were any aftermarket auto shifters in the mid 60's? did hurst have one yet or was that later, like late 60;s to to early 70's? thanks.
>>>>,You could get a Hurst Shifter in a '64 GTO ,,a "64 Ply Fury/ Dodge Coranet with the real long shifter lever ,,a Corvette,,A Ford Mustang ,a ,,well just about every thing, by the late '60's ,,a Hurst Comp Plus Shifter was the norm ,,Factory Hurst Shifters didn't get it anymore ,,
I have a brand new in the box, Sparkomatic shifter kit for a automatic dated 1962, So yes they were available.
Speed shops were few and far between as I recall. But yes you could by a hurst also ansen, fenton, & sparkomatic that I can remember. Probably more than that. I'm actually using the shifter from a '64 Cutless in my current build. Its not a race shifter but it does have detents for reverse and park.
I dont know what your putting this in but here is what I did, used an old Hurst shifter and made my own. I like having the shifter up outa the way. Works good. -Don
I've got a 1960 copy of HRM that has an article featuring all of the aftermarket floor shift conversions availabe at the time, and there were several.
You could get the His/Hers shifter like was in the GTOs (66 or 67??) as an aftermarket shifter. They sold several other automatic shifters in the 60's too. Larry T
Wow thanks for the info! I bin looking in all my mags for pics of mid 60's shifters with not much luck! I am building my fury as if the son got it from his dad and raced it in 65-67 range. but I am not going with the twin cable trans so I am wanting to put a shifter for a singal cable 727 trans from those years. thanks for the pic don but I need something race car than hot rod. thanks again Corry
You've got a sport fury? Wasn't a console and floor shifted automatic an option in the sport fury or did that come later like say about '66 or '67?
Ya its a console car! but in the early 70's it had a later trans put in it that replace the twin cable trans with the more comin 727 (66 and up) singal cable. They even cut the console top plate. And I have a fresh 69 727 that will go back into the car so if I put an early aftermarket shifter in it wont look so out a place.
I used a 64 Dodge console shifter in my 58 Plymouth. I just cut the console off to fit in front of my bench seat. I couldn't get it all the way back for low gear but it was a street car. My 1964 Honest Charlie catalog has the Hurst Dual gate shifter listed. It came with a key to lock out the performance gate side. You could get them for the console or for 25.00 more it included a box to mount it in. The same catalog has an automatic shifter with a mini console also...The Power Shift SS for 19.95 including the mini console. This was a time when automatics were just starting to become acceptable to the hotrodders and there was not a big demand for a shifter.
Neither of the automatic shifters that I listed above had any listed for Mopars. I ran into the 2 cable problem with my Dodge floor shifter. I ended up with no park (the second cable) and was forced to use the parking brake. It's been too many years for me to remember all the details.
Well I hate that they cut up the top plate. But it sounds like you got a plan. I'm not sure about that early but by '68 Hurst was making console mount shifters for most of the popular "muscle" cars.
In '62, pal Johnny Dugan installed a "Cal 7000" linkage in his 312 '56 Ford. Long flat stick, heavy finned cast aluminum housing, all parts chrome plated. Over $100, but just beautiful! He bought it from THE Sid Waterman, who was then a partner in Speed, Inc., San Jose.
